Chaemono Posted August 17, 2019 Share #101 Posted August 17, 2019 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) Apologies for the reflections. These are more test shots from today and I didn't use a polarizing filter. I'm wondering how much sharper the new APO 50 Summicron-SL can really be. Less compressed JPEGs here: https://www.smugmug.com/gallery/n-cJFLQj/ On the the M10-P handheld at 1/125 sec. Look at the details on the headlight. Unfreakingbelievable! This is wide open and here is the link to the DNG: https://cc2032.zenfolio.com/img/g537295750-o750076470.dat?dl=2&tk=vG6Wk1rL7dTUHSN3n4BfI5hBLRl8AY2WJvqK4iHoAyM= Edit: Reference OE/OEM Number of the headlight is 1 305 603 012. It shows clearly but one has to zoom in 4:1. 😂 Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! Perhaps true, but I enjoy the process of making images with the camera more than working at the computer. Just how I prefer to spend my time...

Twasi Posted August 21, 2019 Share #110 Posted August 21, 2019 OK here's a quiz question for everyone. This is an APO Summicron shot wide open. The depth of field is practically nil. But notice in the reflection of the magnifying glass there is a chandelier. It is far outside the measured depth of field, and yet it appears sharp. Why does this happen? The full size file can be seen at: https://www.dropbox.com/s/k1uoh9pt8utzxkq/L1005117.JPG?dl=0 Welcome, dear visitor! Peter Kilmister Posted August 22, 2019 Share #111 Posted August 22, 2019 The image of a chandelier is a reflection. You have captured the reflection's focal point and not the chandelier's focal point. Simple physics to understand if you draw a diagram. 😐
Twasi Posted August 22, 2019 Share #112 Posted August 22, 2019 Yes but if it were a flat mirror, and not a convex lens, the chandelier would be out of focus. Objects in a mirror do not focus on the plane of the mirror. The convexity of the lens must be what brings the chandelier into focus.
Peter Kilmister Posted August 22, 2019 Share #113 Posted August 22, 2019 Every mirror has a focal point. The camera's lens is set to a focal point. Anything that is also at that specific focal point will be in focus ... probably by pure chance. Please draw a diagram of the focal planes. I find this hard to explain but I do understand the physics of light even though I learnt about it well over 50 years ago. Basic physics theory doesn't change. If I had a flat, concave, or convex mirror they all have a focus point. If that point happens to be in line with the lens's focal point then Bob's your uncle (or Voila as the French would say) and everything is focussed. Please go back to your Physics school books.
