Mark,

What a lovely portrait and a remarkable brave lady! It never ceases to amaze me how much fortitude people have in the face of their illnesses. I see stories like this every week in my job as a cancer surgeon and feel humbled every time I see my patients.

Good luck to both of you

Charlie

Yes Charlie, these people are powerful! Liz is my hero! 7 1/2 hours of surgery, 6 (three week apart) chemo rounds, a year of hercepton, and 5 years of hormone therapy! This portrait has inspired me to shoot survivor portraits as a book project with text "In Their Own Words" about the process/journey so others can benefit from the strength and wisdom. We are all humbled.

Mark,

Breast cancer survivors are very special women (and occasionally men - I keep being remonded about this at every breast cancer conference I attend). I have thought about doing a photo-essay about my breast cancer patients. However, the red tape I would have in the UK as a doctor taking photos is just crazy. I would get caught up in confidentaility issues, proving that I hadn't coerced my patients, ethical approval etc. I wish you all the best in your project.

Charlie, I'm sorry to hear of this problem, as you know we have much of this red tape here in the U.S. as well. I think we invented red tape. I think you are doing more than your part already but would love to see you be able to document photographically. As a fashion/beauty shooter and director I don't have these issues. I'm going to talk to the Revlon folks about the project, Liz was operated on by Dr. Helena Chang who runs the Revlon surgical center at UCLA; do you know her? I will keep you up to date on the project and perhaps post more pics as well. best, mark
