I recently bough a brand new MP directly from Leica. It doesn't rattle.

But I have to say, I would be very dissapointed if I spent that that much on a camera and it started to rattle after only two months (as I am sure everybody who is making flippant remarks on this thread would be too). Especially, when the Leica website says "The Leica MP is built for long life and lasting value. This is guaranteed by Leica’s commitment to using only the finest materials and the highest precision manufacturing techniques. "

If you brought this camera brand new, I would insist that it be repaired or replaced. Wetzlar are maybe being reluctant to do any work on it as they are winding down their MP production. But that shouldn't be your problem. You paid for a two year warranty. I would take it back to Leica Mayfair (or maybe try Leica City - they're a bit friendlier), and take a very strongly worded letter with you. Ask them to send it with the letter back to Wetzlar for a replacement or repair.

Not sure about that, but I may have missed something. Most people know Leica has ceased the a la Carte programme and prior to this, M7 production. But I haven't seen anything about MP (or for that matter MA) production being wound down.

These cameras are built in small batches seemingly when they can be fitted around other production demands.

What's your source for the statement?  And given that they can, and do, still service Leica M cameras from all eras, why would they be 'reluctant to do any work' on an MP?

I was informed by Leica Mayfair last month that they Leica have wound down their production of MP's to one shipment per year.

@phototropeI am pretty close to the Leica retail set up in the UK, and I am not sure that's correct.  There is always a wait for MPs, but they arrive in a dealership more than once per year presently.

And it's definitely not correct to state that they'd be 'reluctant to do any work' on an MP.  The service department at Wetzlar will normally oblige, if you're prepared to pay, and an MP is most defintely a serviceable item.

Okay, maybe I was given incorrect information. It doesn't matter :)  The point is, the original poster should get his camera repaired.

Absolutely.  Without commenting specifically on Mayfair,  I think we just need to reflect things as accurately as we can for the benefit of other Forum members.  No reflection on you; you were just reporting what had been told to you.

I would continue to insist.  That rattle may not impede function today, or tomorrow, or in a year...but then again it might.  If they can pull a new MP out of a box in a store and it exhibits the same behaviour, maybe let it go...but if not, then Leica should make it right.

I agree. I had to send a lens back multiple times in past, they eventually got it right.  Even if you want to sell it, I’d have them fix it first.

Finally finished a TMAX-400 film in my MP, not used much since my M10 purchase last year. I took out the film and with no lens attached shook the camera....

Guess what ?

To my great surprise and pleasure I can confirm there is no noise when gently shaken.

The only thing that could make noise would be the camera strap rings tapping against the body.

If there was a screw loose in the rangefinder I’d have hoped Leica would have found it and either screwed it back or removed if it was a “spare”.

Does your rangefinder focusing match the marking on the lens and your estimate of the distance? I.e. is it working OK?

It’s not something silly like one of the 2 LR44 batteries left in the battery compartment when you are using the MP in MA mode (no battery)?

I use the bigger CR1/3n batteries so I only need one, or 2x CR1/3N in an M7.

I have checked with my friend who also owns an MP and his MP does not make any rattle noise. Plus, a manager at Leica Mayfair also told me that MP should not make any noise when shaken.

So it is normal for an MP to make a bit of noise when shaken sideways? Wetzlar told me that it could be due to the release lever of breaking mechanism. If that is the case then all MPs in the world should make the same kind of noise.

Mine's serial starts with 466xxxx so perhaps recent production makes that kind of noise?

I am so confused right now as some MPs make the noise and some do not.

Cameras loosen up with use, grease is spread around as intended and the parts that should move do indeed start to move as intended. It's like a hand made car engine made to tight tolerances, you don't go straight out and rev the bollocks off it because the parts need to bed in, after which it will run far more freely. So saying it did 'this or that' when it was new is a misunderstanding of how hand made precision goods evolve in use.

If that is the case then shouldn't all MPs make some rattling noise when shaken?

I’ve never shaken my MP.  Did you try using it to take the photos? Does it work ok for those?

Yeah, I mainly use it to take a photo. No need to be sarcastic here mate.

It started to rattle when it had returned from Wetzlar for ISO dial repair. Was wondering if other MPs rattle too. If not, I am planning to send it back to Germany. Just want to resolve this before the Brexit.
