Did anyone of you tried this mighty couple : CL & quite light and cheap Lumix S 24-105 ?

it is lighter and only 1/3 the price of APO-Summicron-SL line lenses.

It brings 1:2 macro and OIS to the mix.

But it will drain the small CL battery faster.

Is is it a good idea ?

I tried it for a while because I managed to pick up a used version, obviously someone had bought it as part of a Panasonic kit and decided it wasn't for them.  I actually ended up returning it as I decided it was just too bulky on the CL body, and I like to keep my CL kit small and as light as possible.  Was very happy with IQ though, and it was good to have Macro and OIS. I can't say I noticed a huge jump in battery drain, with whatever lens I always need a spare in my pocket with the CL.  There are a few image samples from me using the combination in the CL image thread.

Thanks for your thoughts. I will look at your photos.

Glad that battery life will not take a huge toll.

I was thinking about it as a more practical APO 55-135 replacement :

- more useful range 35-150mm vs 85-200

- somewhat faster being a constant f/4.

- OIS !

- only 8mm longer but 16mm wider and 180g heavier (36% more)

- cheaper. I also plan to buy a used one from an S1 kit

Think you can see from my first post about it, I was excited at the prospect at first and didn't immediately see an issue with the size.  If I didn't have other options camera wise I think I would have kept it, and definitely had I been able to handle an SL or had thoughts about the Panasonic bodies.  In good light I think the 55-135 TL is a teeny tiny bit ahead in image quality, but I agree it's a really useful range.

It is really too heavy. I use the CL with Leica's thumb rest support and handgrip. Maybe that should help with the handling.

But you are right, I should tried it first for long period of time.

How is AF speed ?

I really did not notice any difference in AF speed between it and the 18-56.

Apologies for my ignorance, but I see no adapter there. Does this mean I can use a Lumix GX85 lens on the CL? I tried to research it online and found nothing definitive. I've been looking at this :

Jake, no.  The lens we are talking about is an L mount lens, the so called kit lens to accompany the new Panasonic S1 and S1R.  I think you a referring to a micro 4/3 lens, no adaptor to fit to TL/CL (if only)!

There is an actual OIS switch on the Lumix S 24-105

m4/3 lenses will never be compatible with L mount. Adapters are physically impossible to make.

Anyway m4/3 has a way too small image circle for APS-C and 24x36 sensors.

So I tried it today.

Still puzzled about it. Quite bad full plastic/magnesium manufacturing process. TL Aluminium/Polycarbonate lenses are way better.

The Lumix S 24-105 makes weird cracking sound when zoomed in or out of 24mm. Quite scary.

OIS is absolutely stellar. I can confidently shoot at 1/8th of sec at 105mm (155mm)   Stabilised viewing is super nice. Kinder to the eye than shaking view through APO 55-135

AF is quite fast. But not as fast as when mounted on a S1.

Size is borderline. Not sure to want to use it everyday. TL 55-135 is more manageable.

Depth of field is a disappointment. Being equivalent to f/6, at 24mm (35mm) bokeh is bon existant. Quite nice at 105mm (155mm) but not that thin.

This last point is really problematic. It’s like using a giant nothing special lens.

I used to have the TL 55-135, sold it and regret it. A very nice lens.

Not sure if the Lumix S 24-105 can replace it. F/4 at the long end is OK. But F/4 at the wide end is quite slow with an APS-C.

I sold the TL 11-18 because I do not like the everything in focus look, it produces. The Q with f/1.7 spoiled me.

The weight and quite poor built are other concerns.

The more I think about it, the more I want it.

Photos from the Panny 24-105mm is very nice

Bokeh is deliciously smooth at 105mm f/4 (158mm eq.)

At 24mm f/4 (36mm eq.) it is equivalent to what I used to get with TL 11-23mm at 23mm f/4.5

Close focus at 30 cm is awesome. It is nice to get a 1:2 macro (1:1.33 eq.) available with a zoom.

Weight should be OK, not that bad against TL 55-135, but range and close focus is way more useful. It should be a very nice travel zoom, combine with Leica Q  28mm

I will try to find a used one from a S1/S1R kit.

Counting actual launch discount. Stand alone price at 1199€ is way too steep, compare to the 800€ extra within a kit.

Will I need a Panasonic body if the new firmware update for the lens is issued ?

I assume I will need to upload a new firmware for the CL before I am going to use the Panasonic lens with my camera.
