In the first place this is a lovely photograph: the colours and the shapes both harmonious and varied; but it answers for me a question which I have been wondering about when using the Noctilux wide open. Where should one focus? I don't suppose there is a universal rule, but a rule of thumb is a start. I suppose it is the same with a portrait: focus on the nearest eye. While I am on the subject of my enjoyment of this photograph, its colour palette makes me think it could have been painted by a Dutch flower painter. Being so out of season I hope they were a gift for a happy occasion.

This is one of the (rare) cases where I like to use an EVF/Visoflex. When there is no obvious place to put the focus, it is nice to be able to see the focal plane moving through the scene as I turn the focus ring on the lens. It's not always easy to imagine what the picture will look like when using a rangefinder. But usually I don't bother to use my Visoflex. My rule of thumb then, is to focus on the first thing on the subject that attracts my attention, and where my gaze settles. Sid Bolan Posted March 22, 2021 Share #1324 Posted March 22, 2021 The excellent work on this thread has greatly reassured me. I had previously heard that to achieve focus with a noctilux was partly down to making the correct libations and partly a question of pressing the shutter during a propitious alignment of the planets. Where do the seasoned noctilux users stand on the issue of magnifiers - 1.25x? 1.4x? or none at all?

Personally I don't use magnifiers because inevitably they reduce contrast in the rangefinder owing to adding glass and glass-to-air interfaces and with the Noctilux you really want all the contrast you can get in the rf patch to see the small differences in the plane of focus to nail focus on your chosen plane. Pete. I agree on the Leica versions until I discovered the Thumbs Up E-Clipse 1.4X with adjustable diopter from -3 to +3. It is beautifully made and crystal clear and I see no reduction in contrast plus the 1.45X magnifier makes all the difference when focussing my original 1.2 Noctilux, F1. .95 etc. It also has a soft pliable rubber eye piece for comfort. I rate this as a 10 out of 10 and much better than either of the Leica magnifiers. I did have to purchase their screw in thread adapter to go from the older M9/M240 eye piece size to the larger M10 size. I was nervous that I would loose the improved view through the new M10 larger eye piece but either the 1.45X magnifier is tricking my eyes or I just cannot tell.

I don't use them with the 50mms --just with the 90 and 135. What might be of interest with the use of the magnifiers: the RF finder of the M´s have a -0,5 balance--the magnifiers add another -0,5 to that, so you might find yourself unable to focus properly if you are presbyopic or hyperopic or both... vor 1 Stunde schrieb Keith (M): Garden gate. 50mm f1 v4, M10M.
