Apart from a very brief foray about 45 years ago with a horrible cheap Dixon's Chinon cine camera, this will be my first proper experience of Super 8 Cine. I bought this as the Leicina Special looks such a beautifully made piece of equipment and will join the other 27 Leicas in my collection. What I know about the camera and about cine in general, could be written on a very small piece of paper, so any hints or tips would be gratefully received. The other factor in buying it now is the recent availability of Ektachrome cine film 100D. I suppose I will have to get a projector and editor now.

Just a quick further thought - can anyone suggest the most suitable projector for me. There is no point spending extra for sound, as the Leicina Special in a somewhat retrograde fashion for  top end cine cameras of the period, opted not to do sound. I was thinking of either Elmo or Eumig, as one can still buy belts and lamps for them.

It looks like a beautiful thing. I wish you fun with it. I'm sure you'll enjoy learning all about it and perfecting your technique.

Rad Dot have a Leicina lens that you may or may not find interesting.

I can offer no useful hints or tips!

Definitely a machine to drool over.

Never dabbled, myself, but the husband of my cousin did.

From his early stuff I learned get the projector speed correct. The marionette figures went out in the late 1920's.

Pan slowly !

Read up what all the buttons do - then shoot film.

Subject is irrelevant just like learning your own 35mm. technique.

You will have years of enjoyment.

Also, when you are obliged to entertain those who you would wish to leave early, cine is better than stills of holiday photos..!

You spoke about here, Wlaidlaw, and now you HAVE DONE : good decision-making.

I got a Kodak as a birthday gift at 16.... I abandoned filming when felt that to obtain a real good work I should have evolved to film editing… disassemblying and assembling rolls…. I had to decide if was better to spend time and money on this or in darkroom for pictures… and the Kodak is unused from (iirc) 1977-78...

For what is Worth (considering my very short and "Young" experience) , the three above advices from James are golden rules.

Should I decide to have a Leitz no-camera item in my collection… I think it will be a microscope or some surveying item… but agree that Leicina IS FINE… :)

I seem to remember that Leitz listed also some S8 projector… but I doubt there were made by them… maybe were rebadged Braun or Eumig or similar…

One another....fine, welcome !

when you use it, you can understand why you cannot register sounds !

You can find an Heutier projector at good price on the bay

J-C,

There are a number of Heurtier projectors for sale on eBay France. They look a bit like museum pieces compared with the far sleeker Eumig and Elmo projectors.

Another forum member has offered me his dad's Eumig projector, if it can be made to work, so that is the route I will probably go.

I have good results with the Bolex 18-5L, Swiss made projector. I have 8 of the Leicina Specials, but rarely use them anymore.  I searched for a gyroscopic stabalization platform that could be used with this camera, but couldn't find a suitable one. There is one for the Hero 5 or 6 digital camera as they are used for all types of activity such as motorcycling, hiking, ect. Learning to use the la p disolve and fade functions takes a little time. You probably know there was a leitz ST-1 control unit. Happy filming.

I always liked the demo that the Optiviron would focus from infinity to anything touching the front lens element. Leitz marketing used a fly to illustrate, but shouldn't it be the underside of the fly that we see on film?

It turns out it is a quite high quality Elmo projector (an ST-1200D) not a Eumig that I have been offered and looks to be in lovely condition. I have ordered a new set of belts as the existing ones had turned into gooey liquorice.

Yes... and both sides aren't so sexy… they had done better to choose a gentler beast… :P

I have just bought 2 new sets of genuine OEM spare belts for the Elmo ST-1200D that I have agreed to acquire from a forum member. The original belts, unused since 1976, had turned to gooey liquorice. The Elmo projectors have a pretty good reputation, so for my limited use, I am sure it will be fine. This one has both sound and the provision to add sound, which might be nice for the non-sound Leicina Special. I assume the super 8 film has a magnetic strip down the side.

I am just reading a long and very helpful article on taking Super 8 film by the company Pro 8, who sell various types of Super 8 and Super 16 films. One of the things they say is that before you start, to clean the gate on the camera with a soft toothbrush and not to use a blower, as that is likely to be ineffective. Now as someone who over the last 60 years has strenuously avoided touching the shutter on any camera, this sounds like a fraught procedure to me. Any advice would be gratefully received. The Leicina Special manual is silent on this matter.

The camera arrived today and I fear there may be a problem with this camera. When I put in batteries, although the zoom and auto exposure on the Optivaron lens are working, the shutter open light is illuminated all the time. I believe that the motor will not run unless there is a cassette in the camera and the shutter may just be stuck in the open position. However I would not expect this light to be on, unless the camera was set to the single frame or time exposure setting. The light remains on, even when the camera is switched to the off position on the frame speed dial. I have ordered a film from Wittner in Germany and when that arrives I will be able to test further but not too optimistic.

Any thoughts folks?
