Very appreciative review! My favorite:

Its all-in-one package means it won't incite a potentially ruinous addiction to lenses, or commit you to lifetime of talking-down the value of autofocus.

This won't make availability any easier. I'm ready to spend the money but no chance.

With a user name like CalStanford I'm guessing you might be in the SF bay area.  If so I think it was yesterday when someone posted that there is a store in Berkeley with a couple of available Q2.

After reading much about the Q2 and puzzled by the jpeg issue.  I own M240 with Nocti and 35FLE etc which I really enjoy but at time a pocketable autofocus has its place. My old Digilux2 is wonderful but a different era. My question is can Leica fix the JPEG issue with software update and is there any news about this?  Do most think Leica will address this known problem that DP have flagged. I was hoping to be able to use BW jpegs as well, does that work currently without any of the negative comments from DP (or are their concerns ONLY for color). What does BW look like with Q2, hopefully stunning.  Many thanks

I have used pretty much every brand out there. My feeling is only Fuji has a Jpeg worth using staright out of the camera. With that said the abilty to post process the Q2 files is awesome.  I mean there is so much that can be done with these files.  If I want snap shots I use my iPhone.  If I want images that I can produce works of art, or finished products I would only shoot raw.  I can take the same raw image and process 3-4 diffrewnt ways and get 3-4 effects that are all different   The Q2 is not for everyone. The are much better options out there for Jpeg images..

Thank you so much. That's really nice of you!

I used to be but live in Hong Kong now. It's impossible to get here. Been on a waiting list with the local stores (which all sell it for 10-15% more expensive than in the States) but they only give preferential treatment to VIPs. My "#4" spot at Leica IFC has dropped each time I called to a lower number magically. Has put a very sour taste in my mouth. Cancelled my B&H order back in April when they kept giving out fake promises of availability.

Real pity

That sounds, that JPEG doesn‘t work on the Q2. I think everybody should cool down. JPEG is JPEG and the images of the Q2 are superb. I think many comments in this regard are exaggerated. Go out and take photos. :)

Agreed. If one reviews their gallery, which includes straight out of camera JPEG and edited, you will see that the JPEGs looks fine. I actually prefer the JPEGs out of the camera samples in the gallery compared to their edited to "taste" samples. Any JPEG criticism is going to be very subjective.

Thanks for your.replies and I get the raw post process, but my question still is can and  do we expect Leica to improve software so jpeg quality out of Camera will improve?

can you make out of camera say raw and BW jpeg images simultaneously like on m240?  Thanks

Full disclosure: I've banged a 10% non-refundable deposit on a Q2, so I've effectively already nailed my colours to the mast.

I've been trying not to worry about the jpeg performance, since I've been a RAW shooter for years. But it seems, and the downloadable manual backs this up, that you have quite a lot of control over the look of the OOC jpegs. Sharpening, saturation and contrast are all tweakable, in degrees of granularity.

Seems to me you'd want to play with those settings before making a judgement. I know I will.

I should be grateful if the following statement from the review's conclusion could be explained to me please.

I have very limited understanding of these technical points.

"The JPEGs are its Achilles' heel, with dull color and the inclusion of lots of dynamic range making them look rather flat in most situations."

Why would the inclusion of lots of dynamic range make the images look flat?  I thought it would be the otherway round.

If anyone has time to explain , I should be very grateful.

thanks

If there's more dynamic range than you are seeing more detail in the shadows and highlights, which tends to make the image look "flatter," I.e., less contrasty with less "pop."  I think that's a good thing because you can then always adjust the contrast and other things in post processing to your taste.

@pmendelson

Thanks for the explanation. Now I understand the comment made in the review.

There is an adjustment within camera that can be made to adjust contrast (pg 55 of user manual).

I get the impression that the reviewers did not delve very much into the menu system in order to adjust image quality & film style settings parameters, of which there are several.

Hmmmm interesting read of the review.

My interpretation of this review may be that the Q2’s sweet spot could be when

it’s setup as a 35mm Elmarit (2.8) which I don’t have a problem with.
