quixotic_elixer Posted May 3, 2019 Share #1 Posted May 3, 2019 Advertisement (gone after registration) I've picked up my first Leica (M3) and scored a pretty good deal on a Canon 50mm 1.4LTM. I'm currently looking for an adapter for it and have found locally someone selling a voigtlander 35-135 adapter, and I am wondering if this will work with this lens? From my research I understand that adapter should be paired with focal length, but i've read that the 50mm framelines also don't disapear So I am wondering whether this adapter will work since the M3 doesn't have 35mm framelines? Are there any other alternative to the voigtlander 50-75 adapters? Your help is appreciated!
Advertisement Posted May 3, 2019 Posted May 3, 2019 Hi quixotic_elixer, Take a look here Voigtlander 35-135 adapter for 50mm on M3?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
TomB_tx Posted May 4, 2019 Share #2 Posted May 4, 2019 (edited) The M3 50mm framelines stay visible, but the 135mm framelines will appear with that adapter. It can be used if you can ignore the smaller frame. There are many makes of 50mm adapters. Rayqual is also good. The Canon 50 1.4 is quite good, especially if it is the second version. a.noctilux Posted May 4, 2019 Share #3 Posted May 4, 2019 (edited) While waiting for the right adapter 50/75, if price is correct I'd go for the 35/135 adapter. On my M3, when I happen to use a 35mm lens on it, the 135 frame lines don't bother me. The 135 lines are so fine to help composition (and in my use of 35mm lens on M3, these faint 135 lines tell me the 35mm is there 😉). So maybe, this faint 135mm lines in the VF along with the 50mm thick lines can become a plus for you 😏. As side note, I have one Voigtlander 50/75 adapter mount on my Canon LTM 1.4/50mm = nice lens (no not really a Summilux class, but not bad for it's price and age). Does anyone know what/where the mechanism that triggers the framelines are? Would it be possible to just jam or stick it so the 135 stays hidden? a.noctilux Posted May 4, 2019 Share #5 Posted May 4, 2019 (edited) With your M3's "field control lever", the lever (at/with left hand when looking in the viewfinder) to change it to "50", then put some kind of cardboard/rubber plate to block it at the "50" setting. like this M5, the setting here is 35/135 "50" setting would be at middle "90" at the other side toward the lens Welcome, dear visitor! I should note that this is a 1955 M3DS and it doesn't have a frameline lever. How do adapters automatically identify and establish the frameline? Just try "not to worry" about the 135 framelines. How ? To complete your knowledge 😇: One of the 4 "positive claws" on the lens rear is cut to index the right framelines automatically in the M, since the first M lens. Welcome, dear visitor! I guess I can settle with the 35/135 and just live with the 135 lines. Not sure I can justify the extra cost when it can go towards an actual future leica lens lol. a.noctilux Posted May 7, 2019 Share #11 Posted May 7, 2019 I've tried those cheaper (costing few euros "no name" or unknown naming ) adapters and now they are not in use anymore. Downsides are multiple : soft metal comes first (not much force to bent them) with poor dimensional many times (need to be exactly 1.00mm thick), some stop threading a couple of degrees more or less, some even can't be removed from the body, and so on. Leitz/Leica or Voigtlander adapters are the choices for peace of mind.

A Local classified has a 35-135 adapter for $65 CAD, KEH has one for $45USD+45 shipping. And Voigtlander don't sell them anymore so it's difficult finding stock. Don't go for the cheap alloy adapters (although they can work), but the one above with KOOD branding will be fine as it's a company that makes filters for many other camera company's, Leica's UV cut filters for example. Doesn't mean KOOD made it, but they put their name to it. Edited May 9, 2019 by 250swb

Something I noticed is that the aperture controls only work in full stops. My question is if I adjust it to the halfway point, does that equate to a half stop adjustment? Or is that relationship nonlinear? I'm just looking to understand if it's possible to make small exposure adjustments on a camera and lens that only operate in full stops. a.noctilux Posted May 10, 2019 Share #18 Posted May 10, 2019 My Canon LTM 1.4/50 can be adjusted the aperture as I like between two clics. I'm sure that those settings are linear. I have 50mm older Summilux-M with full stop "clics", and newer Summilux-M with half stop clics. Even I prefer those without "aperture setting clic" at all, like my Elmar or Summar (in LTM 😇) or some Jupiter 3 - 8 in 50mm.
