Ouch. Vibration on a motorcycle can generate a great deal of force even if there's not a lot of movement. I've carried a camera on two wheels across multiple continents and always try to use my body as a shock absorber. Either I'll have the camera around my neck or in a knapsack where it's not mechanically coupled to the engine or frame. My hard-core off-road riding friends frown on this since they're sure the camera will end up embedded in my abdomen after a crash. Some people like to put a camera in a tank bag because it's easy to access, but that's one of the worst places for vibrations, IMO. I did sometimes carry my M8 in a small Domke bag at the top of my panniers (see profile photo) on a v-twin KTM and the camera never failed. I think the focus accuracy suffered though, and I just had it adjusted by DAG. A roadside "hex key" tweak would worry me because 1) that kind of adjustment is difficult to do at home under controlled conditions and 2) the body would spend a long time with the shutter cavity exposed to dusty air. The worst thing I've ever done to a camera was carry it on the back of a bike across washboard roads in Death Valley. I was using a very well padded bag, and thought that was enough. At the end of a particularly nasty stretch, I stopped to take a photo and found that the lens was in pieces. The body was trashed too. Fortunately, it was only a Canon. 😉 Years before, the same camera and bag fell off while riding at about 70mph. "What's that green thing spinning in the rear view?" I asked myself. Oops. The nylon material of the camera bag was melted in a couple of spots from the friction of hitting the pavement. Amazingly, the camera and lens were perfectly fine and survived a few more years of callous treatment until the Death Valley trip.

pico Posted May 2, 2019 Share #22 Posted May 2, 2019 (edited) Keep in mind that a camera carried across your chest can almost hang you by the strap if you crash. That's me below. The camera, an M9 was destroyed and dug into my chest bruising three ribs. My helmet was also destroyed. AND this was from a bicycle crash! Welcome, dear visitor! a.noctilux Posted May 2, 2019 Share #23 Posted May 2, 2019 We travel with Flat Twin BMW and it's huge vibrations need to be understand how to travel with cameras. So I learned to make some kinds of vibrations absorbers to be put in my gear's bag on the tank. Over time, that was the best place for me to acces to with enough security for us when falling (experienced that a couple of times). Leica are tough, while other brands are not as good ( Xpan Hasselblad are the worse for me, RF was always "off " when motorcycle travelling . epand56 Posted May 8, 2019 Share #24 Posted May 8, 2019 I wonder how couriers like FedEx or UPS treat the shipped boxes from Leica when they deliver them at the stores. May be they are quite rude, at least here in Italy. I think they drop and shake them a lot. I bought two cameras so far, am M8 and an M240, and both had to be sent back immediately for rangefinder calibration. This said, my M240 had rangefinder calibration four years ago and noting happened to the rangefinder since. So far it is still perfect. I don't think age could affect the rangefinder alignment, only physical bumps or a fall could misalign it. 1

Herr Barnack Posted May 18, 2019 Share #26 Posted May 18, 2019 I had to have my film MP rangefinder calibrated once, same thing with my M240. both were the result of dropping the camera bag they were in. Not big drops, either. Thanks to my bad knee and a tree root, I once tripped and did a face plant on a sidewalk while carrying my film MP in a Domke F4AF. My right knee and elbow were a bloody mess and I was sure the MP and 50 Summilux were wrecked, since the bag flew about eight feet and landed on the sidewalk. When I picked up my kit and looked inside the bag, everything was fine. The rangefinder was even still in alignment. Go figure.
epand56 Posted July 15, 2019 Share #27 Posted July 15, 2019 Advertisement (gone after registration) Just on time, immediately after i ought my M 240. I suspect due to a rough handling of the courier that delivered the camera to the shop. After that never in 5 years. The same happened with my M8, that is perfect since (lot of years). Gibbo Posted July 15, 2019 Share #28 Posted July 15, 2019 My M240 has gone on holiday to Wetzlar via Leica Manchester for calibration. I’m looking forward to its return 😊
mikeamosau Posted July 16, 2019 Share #29 Posted July 16, 2019 Currently shooting with an MP-240 for almost five years, never needed it done.
sblutter Posted July 20, 2019 Share #30 Posted July 20, 2019 For the M240, just once. I noticed the very reliable 50 summi was back focusing. Hmm??!! I checked several other lenses, all back focusing to the same degree - meaning it was obviously the body All fine since DAG fixed it. Has been spot on about 18 months now He also did my M3 many years ago
agiknee Posted July 23, 2019 Share #31 Posted July 23, 2019 Does anyone know of any shops in Los Angeles that’ll calibrate my 240. It’s off in the focus patch. Everything is slightly off vertically. Up or down depending on distance. Thanks in advance !

grick Posted August 18, 2019 Share #33 Posted August 18, 2019 (edited) I just sent in my M240 to Leica USA for CLA. There is currently an M240 CLA summer special going on. It's $170 off the normal CLA price with about a two week turnaround. I bought my camera last year, used, from Popflash. I have no idea about this camera's past except that it has an early serial number. I wanted to insure that everything is in order and cleaned and from here forward my usage will be responsible for problems that arise. News about the summer special, that I was told by Leica New Jersey customer service lasts until September 20, 2019: https://www.reddotforum.com/content/2019/07/leica-offers-m-typ-240-summer-repair-special/ Greg Edited August 18, 2019 by grick

Gibbo Posted August 19, 2019 Share #35 Posted August 19, 2019 I shall collect my M240 from Leica Manchester on Wednesday having been informed that it has returned from Wetzlar. Apparently it has had the rangefinder calibrated, the sensor aligned and cleaned and a CLA all at Leica's expense. I'm quite excited to be getting it back!
Gibbo Posted August 21, 2019 Share #36 Posted August 21, 2019 I have my camera back and all is well! They also threw in a 16Gb sd card, which is nice!
