Is the Leica S system capable of some evolution that allows for more customers?

ynp Posted March 28, 2019 Share #2 Posted March 28, 2019 (edited) Interesting indeed. I have a heretical thought. Who’s able to make me a Leica S- Fuji GFX adapter? And for how much? I am very curious to test my S lenses on the 100mpx Fujifilm body. Thanks. Yevgeny. P.S. Talked to my wife and have her permission to spend up to $10,000.00 for an AF adapter. albireo_double Posted March 28, 2019 Share #3 Posted March 28, 2019 I would buy that adapter too, perhaps not at $10k, though. But it would have to be able to (i) control the aperture, (ii) trigger the leaf shutter in my CS lenses, (iii) provide all EXIF data, (iv) allow as fast AF as native Fuji lenses and, ideally, (v) have profiles provided in C1 for each lens. Not going to happen. But hey, maybe we could persuade the Fringer guy to give it a shot, if we offered him $10k each ;-)
Stuart Richardson Posted March 28, 2019 Share #4 Posted March 28, 2019 (edited) 3 hours ago, rosuna said: Is the Leica S system capable of some evolution that allows for more customers? I think this is pretty doubtful. Leica has their price range, and I think the issue is as much the lenses as the bodies. When they introduced the camera it was priced fairly competitively...cheaper than all other current medium format offerings, other than a few particular end of life or lower end models. It was Leica's best system to date, with the highest technology, craftsmanship and performance they could muster. I think since then the market has totally shifted, but the system Leica has locked themselves into has not. They still have those production costs for the lenses and bodies, both of which are likely a lot higher than, for example, the Fuji or Hasselblad competitors. I think it is more likely that Leica will end the system before they take it down to a competitive level. The pricing for the S3 sounds like it is going to be above 20,000 euros, and given that the cheapest S lens still retails for over 4000 euros (with most around 6000) versus Fuji's GFX 50R with 63mm lens, which coincidentally costs around 6000 euros combined. I do not think Leica can or will try to compete with this. They simply can't. Which means to me that they will most likely continue to charge what they have charged before, and if no one buys it, they will exit the MF market. And I am not that interested in the native COne profiles to be honest.
tom0511 Posted March 28, 2019 Share #6 Posted March 28, 2019 I think Fuji is a very good system, but I also believe the S-system, specially the lenses have more soul. I believe if Leica makes sure the S3 has no flaws when it comes to market, and if Leica does a good marketing, the S has a future. I also believe that - besides some advantages specially in regards of focus accuracy - the EVF of Fuji and Hassy has not only advantages. The S feels more direct and fast and you can see the real light in the viewfinder, and not just a digital image of it with low DR and muted colors. My wishlist would be the following: 1) make sure AF works accurate in a longterm 2) add some more AF points in the S4 3) add 1 or 2 more compact lenses 4) make the price right - must not be as low as Fuji but still it should be reasonable.
Stuart Richardson Posted March 28, 2019 Share #7 Posted March 28, 2019 Advertisement (gone after registration) I totally agree with respect to the viewfinders...I still have not met an EVF that I like, no matter how "great" and high resolution they are. I know the SL EVF is supposed to be top, but it is still nothing like an OVF. I also agree with all that list, though the AF points don't really make a difference to me. It would be nice to have a compact 50-60mm lens, for example, even as a 2.8-3.5.

Stuart Richardson Posted March 29, 2019 Share #13 Posted March 29, 2019 That adapter does not focus to infinity...nor does it have aperture control. I actually talked to Fotodiox directly about it, and the guy basically told me that they wanted to sell out of that one before they fixed it. I suggested that more people might be interested in it if it focused to infinity, and he agreed, but said that that was what the higher-ups wanted. I suppose it would not hurt if more of you all called them and asked for an adapter that focused to infinity!
ropo54 Posted March 29, 2019 Share #14 Posted March 29, 2019 (edited) I apologize for my ignorance, but what aperture setting does a Leica S lens shoot at when used with the adapter on the GFX? Does it default to the fastest aperture, so that if shooting with the S 70 2.5, when attached to the GFX will it be set at the 2.5 aperture (with no option to change the aperture setting)? Thanks, Rob Edited March 29, 2019 by ropo54

Thanks, Rob Correct. When mounting electronic lenses on a dummy adapter, the default aperture equals the widest aperture. You can, however, present the len's aperture on a S-body by removing the lens while simultaneously keeping the preview button pressed. In this case the lens' aperture will stick at the aperture when mounted on the S-body. Far from elegant, but this is all a dummy adapter can deliver...

Rob Theoretically, Aperture of the lenses can be controlled on the camera by turning the command dial, as with the techart canon adapter.

There is no market in their view. I think that there’s a market, the used S lenses I see locally are pretty cheap, and the rumored S3 price is to high for the majority of hobbyists. And there’s nothing in the Fuji universe like the S120mm or S180mm. with the close up adapter lens. Even that unloved S70mm is unique and can be had s/h for about $2,000. Joakim Posted March 29, 2019 Share #18 Posted March 29, 2019 (edited) I too would love to see an S-adapter for GFX (or Hasselblad X1D) and I am fine with AF not working, I have a S-006 and upgrading to the S3 seems like a very unrealistic option. (And the 70mm is one of my favorite lenses) Edited March 29, 2019 by Joakim

Fixed aperture is, however, strongly limiting the flexibility and usefulness of the S-lenses (as any other lenses).

They made a mistake at calculating the flange distance, and rather than fixing that problem, they want the consumer to buy out their mistake so they don't make a lost and then they will do the new adaptor? Tells you as much what kind of company they are... Anyway, without aperture change capability, this is next to useless, and I think a electronic one is not coming any time soon cause Leica won't share the S protocol unless those lazy ass company like fotodioz who are not even willing to fix a flange distance problem are willing to reverse engineer a read out of the leica lens, good luck with that.
