Cyril Jayant Posted March 30, 2019 Share #41 Posted March 30, 2019 Advertisement (gone after registration) If this question was asked about 12-15 years ago for a Leica camera and what camera to get for the first time then the answer is simple. Name Just one camera and get one which is affordable. It will last as long as any other camera. But now M digital has a very limited life. M9 is a great camera ( I also have one ) but its life is very short and Leica Ag has already condemned to put it to end. So why buy a M9 ? in reality, I do not recommend that to anyone who wants to have a Leica as the first one. Invest some more money and get a Leica M-type 240 so you have an assurance to maintain it with a repair, as Leica has spare-parts and repair services is available. If someone offers you as a gift Leica m9 don't refuse it and you have a camera free. If it fails, Definitely, it'will as the first problem is the sensor. And in case a serious breakdown use is as a paperweight or give it to your kid to play with.
Advertisement Posted March 30, 2019 Posted March 30, 2019 Hi Cyril Jayant, Take a look here Is used Leica M9 is good for a first Leica or should I go to M10 for the newest and greatest?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!

They will still accept the M8 provided they have the parts they need. For the M 9 that would be full service until 2023.

In my friend's Leica Premier dealership in London, at which I regularly help out, we are still sending M9 generation cameras to Wetzlar for sensor replacement (usually also involving a service for the camera too). Not cheap these days, but there is no suggestion of Leica 'condemning' the M9, M9P, ME or Monochrom Mk1 in service terms just yet...... They are still fine cameras, and many prefer the CCD files to the later CMOS cameras.

I did not know this and these dates are just guided lines and they'll be changed according to their stock. it is fair enough. 22 hours ago, ianman said: Really? My M6 bought 1998 * AS SECOND HAND * is still being used and look as if it was got yesterday. Here is no official "Leica Ag" release what M9 are somewhat not supported. More so, here not even single thread on the net where it was mentioned. Only yours subjective speculations. Sorry. By any chance, did you mentioned "free support"? Is so, yea, it might be no free service from Leica for M9. Just like for your M6 or whatever... Edited March 31, 2019 by Ko.Fe. jaapv Posted April 1, 2019 Share #50 Posted April 1, 2019 If you want it officially just call them. I’m not going to look up Leica’s states policies. Life’s too short.
Myvalko Posted April 4, 2019 Share #51 Posted April 4, 2019 Hi, As it has been said for decades, invest on Lenses (of course Leica 🙂 ), not on cameras... M9 is still very good after 7 years!! Just my opinion. D
JohnnySeven Posted April 6, 2019 Share #52 Posted April 6, 2019 The M9 is a solid camera. Ive been using mine for almost 10 years problem free. Id say buy a nice M9 with a replaced sensor and see if the rangefinder world is your world. The M10 is a great camera but a pricey one.
One LCF Posted April 9, 2019 Share #53 Posted April 9, 2019 M9 who had their sensors replaced before October 2015 did not get the new sensor. But other than that the M9 is still a great camera. Invest in glass!

As title, should I go for a used M9 or a new M10 for my first Leica? As for M10, I might need to save money for few more month before the purchase. Please help and would appreciate if anyone can provide to pros and cons for each. Thank you. If you have the money: buy a new M10 . prices are decreasing and you can ask €6000,- for a new camera in Europe. If you don't have the money, buy a Leica M 240 P . It's almost as fast as an M 10 and a great body. It has a way nicer shutter sound IMHO than the M9 ( I was really glad to get rid of that tin can sound ) and feels more solid. The sensor is 5 year old but is still relatively modern. The computer is up to date with the M 10. and the M240 ( used ) costs a fraction of the M 10 and about €1000,- more than a M9. You can learn to like the Leica and keep your money to buy a few good lenses that are well priced , like an Elmarit-M 2.8/24mm ASPH a supurb lens which is very cheap priced at the moment ( € 1300,-/1500 ) and a summicron 2.0/50mm type IV canada, or a used and one of the best summilux asph the 1,4/50mm used for € 2500,-. If you like in Europe price are very favourable at the moment. ( or fly via Amsterdam on you way to Japan ...)
WvE Posted May 6, 2019 Share #55 Posted May 6, 2019 I would start off with a M9 (or M8), see if you like it and when the M11 comes out, try to find an "inexpensive" M10.
One LCF Posted May 6, 2019 Share #56 Posted May 6, 2019 You could also see whether the SL (Typ 601) appeals you. Used SL prices will probably fall below M240 prices this year.
Mike Posted May 8, 2019 Share #57 Posted May 8, 2019 The M9 is, to this day, an incredible camera. It was my first and only Leica, which I bought used in 2015 and was forced to sell a couple years later. Lately, I've been looking to get another. It's a blast to use and I made some of my favorite images with it... image quality is great in a way that is completely different from my modern Nikon stuff. WvE Posted May 8, 2019 Share #58 Posted May 8, 2019 Fully agree, the M9 is a fun camera to use, in spite of its obvious shortcomings. Under the right circumstances the IQ can be second to none.
Eric727 Posted May 8, 2019 Author Share #59 Posted May 8, 2019 Thank you everybody for the sharing. I still in thinking about whether M9 or Typ240 to go with, and there is some different in terms of price. The M9 seems struggle to handle above ISO1600 and of course the potential sensor issue... Cheers...

How about M(typ 262) ? you can find one (M 262 not really easy or cheap, second hand), but you have a handsome M (as M9), almost as light as M9 (M240 is heavier 80-90g more) quieter sound than M9 no video (if you don't need it of course, as M9/M10 😉) battery life is far better than M9 or M240, M10 output is as "good" as M10 in my use to about 3200 ISO combo with Summarit-M lens = nice Leica beginner setup (Leica "offered" as kit some years ago)
