I bought the 75mm APO Summicron when it was released to see what it was like compared to the 75mm Summilux, and to see if I could have a smaller, lighter version. I liked it so much I never sold it. I use it much more than the Summilux, which I think is somehow better suited to film bodies. They are both excellent lenses, and I would be happy with either one. But for versatility, the APO is hard to beat with modern bodies. The gap between them in performance widens as our digital cameras get better. If you want to resolve 50mp, the APO will be the better choice.

I am in Berlin and went to the Leica store today and compared my 75 APO M to the 75mm APO SL, and so far I could not tell any major differences other than handling. Surely, the AF is very nice to have, and the specs on the 75mm APO SL look superb, but I could not find any fault with the M version either...at least on the 24mp S1, and shooting a few frames out the door. This is a good thing for me, as I do not think I need another Leica lens in the 70-75mm focal length!!

I used the 75 APO on film for a few years but found that it was too close to 50mm. Optically, however, it is truly amazing and I also didn't have any problems focusing it at closer distances. It is quite heavy, and as I recall a bit front-heavy too. But build quality is really very nice indeed. I instead use the 90 Elmarit-M which in my view has similar sharpness and is sufficiently distant from 50mm to give me good spread among the focal lengths. It is quite a bit lighter and less "voluminous". Ultimately if I don't use a lens enough, which was the case with the 75 APO, I will sell it.

In my case, I find the M superb, although it doesn't like backlighting at times (severe loss of contrast).  However, the SL version is a step up.  Cleaner images, more contrast, even backlit.

The M lenses are great, but there is a reason that other lenses are bulkier.

SmokeSolid, who cares if lens is sharp or not, model is hot.  Day is dull so thank you for posting those.

We need a new thread; Show us your best model to show-off your Leica lens!

Lol that will be a cool thread.

Dear all,

what makes this lens so difficult to focus? I read about that issue in different posts and wonder if someone could describe what actually makes it so hard.

Thank you very much for your answers.

You should find all answers you need in this very thread but i have the same feeling with the 75/2 apo as with other Leica lenses that were designed before the launch of the M8. The earlier copies may have focus issues when later ones have little to none. Common point between the latter they have been 6-bit coded by Leica. A reason could be that Leica calibrates lenses for digital when coding them. Same experience with Summicron 35/2 asph v1, Summilux 35/1.4 asph pre-FLE and Summicron 75/2 apo here. All of them are coded by Leica and none have focus issues as far as my copies are concerned. Just a feeling.

I have the chance to buy one from 2024 and was curious to know whats the matter with the focus since I found many statements about it being hard to focus.

Thank you for your post.

The focus throw is very short, combined with narrow depth of field, it is easy to miss even using e.g. a x1.25 magnifier. At close distances, it seems easier to hit focus with a 50mm Noctilux than the 75/2.

75mm Summicron, M10. Good thing with Leica M cameras is low shutter lag, and ability to track objects coming into frame.

Couple of snaps with M11 and 75/2 apo at MFD below. No focus issue with this coded copy.

This. The short focus throw is the main issue in the field. Both my 75/2 and 75/1.4 v2 have been coded by Leica and are perfectly calibrated, yet slight mis-focus is more frequent with the former in my experience. Unless of course, I have plenty of time to concentrate. On the other hand, I have missed a few pictures due to the Summilux long (and somewhat stiff) focus throw. Can't have it all...😉

Did you set focus, then rock back and forward for RF coincidence ?

I don't remember but i focus normally with this lens. Same as with the 90/2 apo for example.

I don't know. I never found it difficult to focus. It was my favourite lens on the M240.
