I went through the thread on your advice @Steven and @Artin

I feel that the Cron ASPH. might be too high contrast…

Hence Summarit might be safer, if I choose a modern 35mm.

Else I should bite the bullit and go 35 Cron V4 or 35 Lux Pre-asph.

@adan, what are your thoughts on the perfect compact 35mm lens for M10?

If you can live with the knowledge that the lens is not made by Leica (I couldn't 😄), then the most sensible choice is probably the Voigtländer Nokton 35/1.4 II. It combines all the benefits from both Leica lenses: compact size, 0.7 m close focus, f/1.4, and much sharper wide open.

It has some distortion (which the Leica lenses don't have), but this can be easily removed by choosing the proper lens profile in LR.

… sorry, I‘m not @adan but I would like to say that there is no such thing as “the perfect” XXXlens. Only you can decide which lens suits you and your style of photography best. I am pretty sure we all wouldn’t even agree on a common definition of “compact”. And “perfect”?! “Perfect” is an intellectual concept that you have to fill with a reasonable meaning for yourself.

And by the way, if you are shooting raw you can emulate almost every look in post, except the so called “artistic” flaws in old lenses or new lenses build with an old design.

I know this is a very individual impression, but from looking at the pics here in this thread, taken with the pre-aspherical Lux, it appears to me that this lens shows its full potential in black and white photography.

Yes, I’m coming to the same conclusion.

This shot of Arthur’s (and others) is making me reconsider my 35 Summilux pre-asph).  When I get my M-A back later this week, I’ll load some Tr-X and will battle theflare monster again.

😱

One of 3000 made in 1960.  Apparently not usable with the M9 and subsequent digital M cameras without modification to the mount.  Erwin Puts summary:

Quote

At full aperture this lens has low overall contrast with a modest definition of fine details and subject outlines. Stopping down, the improvement is com- mendable, becoming ex- cellent around f/8. The overall performance char- acteristic should be put in the context of its age and small volume.

Doesn’t sound like it’s worth it, Arthur.  Your pre-asph version II is a better bet, it seems …

I see that, but … it has a steel rim … and it’s a version I Summilux, which Mr Puts and others say is not so flash wide.  Your images won’t tell you the lens has a steel rim, or a silver chrome, black chrome, black paint or anodised barrel …

First shot with my 1966 Summicron v1 as I walked out the Leica store in Amsterdam. It was a dark day here in NL.

Before you get to enjoy its rendering, have you at least been able to enjoy how beautiful and ergonomic it is ?! I love this lens's build quality.

Yes. It’s one of the most important reasons for me to buy and use it. Love the size and built.
