Jeff S Posted December 21, 2019 Share #22 Â Posted December 21, 2019 Does anyone know if this lens fits vertically within a Billingham Hadley One? Â (The Hadley Pro, which I own, is too short.)Â The specs for the insert indicate about 1.5 inches shy, but the Oberwerth Porto (far more expensive) has similar specs and it supposedly was designed to hold the zoom vertically. FlashGordonPhotography Posted December 21, 2019 Share #25  Posted December 21, 2019 I no longer *protect* gear. It just makes it difficult to access when I need it. My 90-280 goes into to the bottom of whatever bag I’m using for the day and that’s it. Often.that’s a normal backpack and a gear wrap. I have removed the tripod foot and replaced it with a simple RRS plate with QD mount. The $600,000.00 lens cap is replaced by something that costs 12c or, if I’m shooting landscapes, an 82mm Lee filter ring and cover. I try to take care of my gear but access is the most important thing when I pack a bag. Gordon
Jeff S Posted December 21, 2019 Share #26  Posted December 21, 2019 I assumed that ‘protect’ just meant something other than in hand, mounted on camera...in bag, pouch, backpack or whatever.  Unlike my other lenses, I would rarely if ever use solely the 90-280 for the whole day, hence my questions about carrying, and at least minimally protecting it, while not mounted. At least that was my perspective.  I don’t baby my gear; just seeking functional carry options. Jeff

Removing the tripod food and mounting BQDS instead works much better, though the BQDS's anti-twist flange barely prevents accidental rotation. michali Posted December 22, 2019 Share #28  Posted December 22, 2019 Speaking personally, given the landscapes and environments that we traverse on our safaris, the gear definitely does need protection. A broken lens or camera is no good when sitting in the Namib Desert, 22 hours drive away from the closest town -with no camera shop-,  or 4 hours flight from the closest camera shop.

No hood, filter and front cap. Looks like there might be some differences in the padding over the years... my case doesn't have the mesh on top. Not sure if mine is older or younger than mine. I figured it out... the case I have is the Lowepro Lens Case 4... (4.5 x 10H in. / 11.5 x 25.5 cm) vs (4.3 x H: 10.2" / 11.0 x H: 26.0 cm)... so mine is slightly shorter. chambeshi Posted December 26, 2019 Share #31  Posted December 26, 2019 I use Tenba pouches if the lens travels outside a padded backpack (Thinktank). It is a wise strategy to protect a telephoto with a neoprene coat - including medium tele-zooms. The camou likely helps for wildlife shooting but the rubber takes the brunt of scratches and general wear and is also better than zero impact buffer. The popular US make (on Wex, BandH etc) doesn't wear at all well in my experience. Shoddy stitching. But the covers from this UK supplier are better made. They also release new models soon after a mainstream lens appears in the market. Maybe worth contacting them to enquire https://www.outdoorphotographygear.co.uk/otheritems.html
Sjz Posted February 8, 2021 Share #32  Posted February 8, 2021 Just want to add my thanks to those who found the Lowepro. I am happier having the lens in the case than having it in its bag in the bottom of my fstop rucksack.
HPFM Posted May 5, 2021 Share #33  Posted May 5, 2021 i am one of these guys who likes to protect his telephoto-lenses during outdoor (wildlife, nature). For my Nikon gear i am using "easy-cover", possible also for the most common gear (canon, nikon...). When i switched to Leica, especially for the 90-280 i didn't find something similar.... If you are interested also in a "non 100% solution", just try "Lens coat" for Nikon 500 F/5.6 PF VR - an 80% solution for a Leica 90-280 :-))  Welcome, dear visitor! michali Posted May 6, 2021 Share #37  Posted May 6, 2021 I agree, it's not acceptable given the price point of the lens. IMO they're cutting corners, the soft pouch is useless. As I've mentioned earlier in this thread, I've purchased a couple of the Lowepro lens cases which offer proper protection. In addition to the case for the VE90-280L above, I've also got one for the large Canon 400mm f4 USM II, it fits the lens comfortably with the tripod foot, 1.4x TC & the Sigma MC-21 L mount adapter mounted. Vip Posted May 6, 2021 Share #38 Â Posted May 6, 2021 When I bought it I got a protective bag included to. But it is too uncomfortable to un zip and extract every time. So now I use the large oberwerth camera bag that fit my sl2, 24/90,16/35, and 90/

But if I need to carry the 90-280 as an extra lens during a hike, I’ll just place it horizontally in one of my smaller bags. Jeff
