...

I wonder if its a new design, or the 3.5 is an 'imaginative' f/4 from the marketing dept...

The 3.5/21 and 2/35 were prototypes of new designs shown at the Photokina fair in Cologne.

It was interessting to see them showing still not announced prototype lenses there.

Funny how much the hood for the new 21 resembles the style of the old OLLUX for Summilux 35 1st  :)

The hoods were exchanded in the photos ...

It's the hood for the Ultron 2/35, which looks like the OLLUX.

Here it was corrected:

I have both the LTM and M versions of the 21/4 along with the hood. Both bought used dirt-cheap. Maybe I just got lucky twice but I have never had any issues with them on M9 or M240 (coded as Leica 21/2.8 pre-ASPH). No color casts, no pronounced or skewed vignetting. Nothing to compel me to buy a new version. I kept my pre-ASPH Elmarit in case a 1-stop advantage were ever crucial, but I’ve traveled the world with the little f/4 and it has never been a problem. Glad to see CV still in there punching though.

Aha ! Thanks, didn' notice that image : indeed, it looked to me an oddity to have styled a hood exactly like old Summilux 35's one… just to make it for a 21... :p (and the other hood looked a lot WIDE for a 35... B) )

I like much this OLLUX-like hood. I wonder if it can fit the CV 21/3.5 on APS cameras. Or the LH4-N vented hood (pic) for E39 35/2.5 and 50/2 CV lenses. Both would be nice on the digital CL i suspect.

The new 21mm 3.5 looks like a very tempting proposition. I have been considering a 21mm for a while but I can't justify the price of the Super-Elmar for a lens I will only use very rarely.

Equally tempted by the new 50mm 1.2 as an addition to my 50mm Summicron.

There are secondhand 21mm Elmarit Asph. available. It may not be as clinical as the SEM but it's still a great lens.

Not the same bulk though.

Only guessing, but I would think it's very likely that the prototype VM 21mm f3.5  will be the same 9 elements in 8 groups configuration as the Sony E mount version that was announced some time ago.

... Unless it approaches the SEM in IQ as well I'm not sure what it provides in terms of options.

Money. While I have not seen a price, most CV lenses are priced in the hundreds of dollars while Leica lenses are priced in the thousands.

While currently all of my lenses are Leica lenses, my experiences with the CV 35/2.5 was very good. It was hard to find fault with a lens that cost 1/10 of the price of the Summicron. When it comes to 21 mm lenses that are often only occasional use lenses, the same savings can forgive a possibly slightly lower build quality.

That said, I will still keep my 21 SEM. It is a fabulous lens.

I guess the lens on the left is the CV? But I was responding to the post where the decision seemed to be between the new CV and a new SEM. According to the wiki here, the Elmarit is just 3mm longer than the SEM. So not that dramatic!

Oh and comparing size of lenses where one has a hood and the other not is cheating  :p  :p

Both have a hood there but the CV's is really tiny. Anyway the CV 21/4 is the smallest full frame 21mm M lens IINW and it feels actually so compared to the SEM as well.

Good point, thank you. I tried one for a few days once and loved it. If I came across one in good condition for a convincing price I would definitely go for it.
