For compactness, the M lenses (Leica, Voigtlander, Zeiss) are, of course, the ne plus ultra, although they do show their limitations compared to SL lenses, the APO 50mm Summicron being an exception.

I’d certainly agree that then M lenses are amazing for compactness, but after comparing a lot of tripod-mounted shots between M10/240 + 50 APO, with SL body + SL 75mm Prime, my gut feel is that the SL primes are ahead of every M lens. It’s certainly a “conflict” in my head (given I enormously like the compactness of my M 50 APO), but it’s pretty clear to me now (almost reluctantly) that the SL primes draw better than even the best M lens ....I’m not sure this is even visible in the MTF charts, but whatever is occurring in the SL prime lens & sensor chain, there is “something” that I’m responding to in the SL shots every time .....

I think what’s exciting from the alliance is not just the potential for a higher megapixel SL2 (hopefully FINALLY making use of the remarkable SL lenses), but also the Panasonic or Sigma alternatives ....a Foveon sensor + SL prime could be a peerless combo for non-High ISO scenes / tripod mounted scenes (likes landscapes or architecture) .......

Interesting. Given that the SL and M10 are both 24 MP cameras, I would love to see a side by side shootout between a Summilux-M 50 on an M10 vs. a Summilux-SL 50 on an SL. Has anybody ever done this?

I’ve done it with both lenses on the SL and the M on an MP240. Im not sure how much (if any) difference the M10 would make.

I consistently prefer the Summilux-SL and have almost completely stopped shooting the M lens.

Me too. I started on this trail trying to get away from bulky DSLRs and their lenses.  The M system offered more compact, but manual focus lenses.  I stuck with them for a bit on the SL, which I adopted because the RF experience was not great for wider lenses and because I wear glasses.    Initially, I pooh poohed the 24-90mm on account of its bulk, but I was won over by image quality and the fact that there was not much weight saving if I had to take several M lenses to cover the same range.  The other zooms and the Summilux 50mm / Summicrons released so far also offer exemplary image quality.

It may be that other brands are now also offering higher quality lenses.  (There is a clear gap between most of my Nikon lenses and their Leica counterparts.) I haven't tried. But I cannot say that I am missing much even as things stand; a macro lens, perhaps.

Would you be able to post a comparison in a separate thread? I would be very interested. (It's also off topic for this thread).

Unfortunately Sigma doesn't plan to offer this lens [ 60-600] for E-Mount or L-Mount.

Isn't Sigma willing to convert other mounts to the L mount for a price? I suppose you could buy it with another mount and have it converted.....
