what to make of these first 2 samples? we're not sure of the post-processing or lenses.

Hard to say, though according to Photorumors the images were shot with the Lumix  24-105.  Given no exif/processing info, all I can say is I'm intrigued. The DR does look promising, but without settings who knows.

I have to say that with a camera slated for release in less than 100 days there is a remarkable dearth of technical information.

You would have thought they would have had a few fully functional pre-production cameras for folk to play with by now as well.

It all sounds rather rushed and smacks of desperation..... Curious.

The SL has always been out of the question for me due to weight & size considerations.  I had hoped that maybe the Panasonic would be something of a mini-SL that would give me the opportunity to have a FF EVF body light enough for me to carry about and use my M & R lenses.  Judging by what I have seen & read so far, those hopes have gone out of the window :(

Maybe the L mount will always require an L of a size camera … designed primarily for L lenses … not M land R lenses.  I use an SL 601 but also use Sony FF mirrorless … but Sony lenses are nowhere near the quality of e.g. SL lenses.

Not sure about those - not very sharp - that might be the lens, but they appear a bit noisy and flat. I'm sure the final production version will give much better results.

Putting together tidbits from various sites, the likeliest scenario, to my mind at least, is that Panasonic will make a more explicit reveal at the end of January and take orders for shipping in late March/early April.

Everything seems a bit delayed, actually, the SL2 as well, I’m afraid. Maybe the L-mount alliance can’t get enough sensors on time. 😀

HDR mode sounds interesting. I wonder how it works. Analogous to Hi Res mode, i.e. the camera takes quickly three consecutive pictures each with different exposure using different shutter speed and combines them for better overall exposure for Shadows and Highlights?

I guess we need to factor this in when discussing the speed of R&D. This from: https://www.mirrorlessrumors.com/

I was at CES this week and I got a chance to handle a mechanical prototype.

Different to the SL, rubbery grip and has a smooth notch at the top of the handgrip, also oddly top-heavy, but I only had 4-5min with the mech sample.

Quite a bit busier with controls, but image quality in the hi-res mode looks very interesting from what they were showing.

The marketing guy mentioned that likely Leica will make an announcement of some kind around of before the Panasonic S1 launch at the end-of-march.

Panasonic is initially not thinking about landscape lenses, but he noted Leica makes some high-quality ones. :)

He couldn't say much about Sigma, he assumed messaging would be coming from them in near future, but they have been silent.

Indeed. One would think that they'd have at least drop a few strong hints to help staunch any defections prior to the moment when one might actually order the Pano.

I wouldn't call a Panasonic sale a defection. It's all within the same system. A defection is when people go to incompatible systems from Sony, Canon, or Nikon.

Whatever you call it, its less money in Leica's coffers if one decides to trade their SL for an SR1 rather than wait for an SL2.
