OK. Fine. How about this?...

All 35mm Summiluxes made between 1967 and 1995 shared exactly the same optical design but when the titanium versions were being produced the workers in Wetzlar removed those particular glass elements from the production line and sprinkled them with Magic Pixie Dust before those leneses were finally finished.

Is everyone happy now? Carry on.

P.

Well it was not actually pixy dust per se, but there is a different coating on the final titanium brass bodies Summilux's and as a result these posses the best contrast and are the sharpest by a measure and yes I did back to back shots of all three, 1961 steel rim, an early V2 and the Titanium and all are fabulous with the Steel Rim possibly being the most interesting/artistic in its rendering with the Titanium noticeably the sharpest and the V2 right in the middle. Price is the gating factor as if you are eagle eyed and lucky you can find a nice V2 for as low as $2,000 and more often up to $3,000. Titanium are $4,000 and up and close to mint V1 Steel Rim with OLLUX hood are $12,000 US and way up. The choice is yours depending on budget mostly, then price aside the rendering. The last item is build quality and the Steel Rim may well be the finest made of all my Leica lenses, the Titanium being made of brass is next with the standard V2 quite adequate.

I have version 2, its a very interesting lens....  not that bad depending on the copy at 1.4, but closing down it really makes it sharp. You can think of it as a very sharp lens at 2.0, that has the capabilities to go to 1.4 when needed :)The main issue to me is  focus distance, only 1 meter which really is hard to work with since i like close up portraits. It also suffers from lens flare, but that actually gives it character.... Some examples below, mostly wide open, in digital (m240 and m10) and in film (Zeiss Ikon).

I know it was an old post but I wanted to add my praise. Many times I see shots posted in various places that were taken with a 35mm FL lens I see loose framing that leaves me saying to myself “should have used a 50mm lens” but I son’t feel that with your shots here, they work with a 35mm lens and would fail if cropped to equivalent of 50mm.

In fact are many other posters showing their well framed shots to my eyes. Many great shots actually. It all makes this forum a good place for folk like me to do some learning!

Summilux 35mm pre-asph Brass Infinity Lock

Out of focus areas at f1.4 (1st missed focus but you can see the bokeh nonetheless)

& at f2.8 in 2nd shot. 3rd shot at f1.4 and with summilux signature flare :)

Marke, was this taken at the minimum .65 close focus or close to it? Wonderful photograph and if this shot doesn't show the "glow" properties of this amazing lens nothing will.

Mark, I’m 90% sure it was at .65– certainly under a meter.

Shot with Portra 400 & Lux 35mm f1.4 V2 transitional model with Brass Lock [serial 216xxx V1 Steel Rim glass, housed in a V2 body, and able to focus up to 0.75m]

I’m cutting down my gear since I hardly shoot these days, so this might be my last post on this thread : / If anyone is interested in getting this rare (& best iteration of the pre-lux from my POV) lens from me drop me a text and we can talk : )

First shot at f2 or f2.8 probably, second one at f8.

Guys! Guys! I finally got one! I was looking for a good german v2 and ordered one off KEH sight unseen. Turns out its a 1990s version in crazy good condition. First test shots make the glow and character seem much more tame than earlier versions loving it so far i cant stop looking at it!

Great find and wonderful acquisition @LeucadiaLeica .  They are marvelous lenses as I just recently discovered myself; I recently become the owner of this minty, Black 1966 version 1, brass infinity lock 'transition' model #21667XX; it has the v1 glass with the v2 body which allows sub 1 meter MFD.  This one came to me by way of Japan and I'm planning to keep this for a very long time, hopefully shooting some memorable photographs with it (like I'm sure previous owners have in the past).

Here it is on my M10M.

Beautiful lens @RMF that thing is sweet. Im so surprised how tame my copy is at 1.4. Ill post an example once i get them in lightroom.

From everything ive read about the late serial v2 its got much more modern coatings for flare. Super fun lens.

M11 -|- 35 Summilux pre-ASPH v2 (~1983 w/DAG CLA in 2020). I can't get over how small this lens is yet it has incredible handling/haptics. I'm afraid now I will "need" a second copy so I can keep one on the M11 and one on the M4-P. Literally do not want to shoot with anything else now. Leica absolutely needs to re-release this lens.

f/1.4

f/8. Taken from a pano made with horizontal shots with the end result being square. This is a vertical 16:9 crop from that square, and the image dimensions are still 17"x30" at 300dpi. Crazy sharp stopped down in all but the tiniest sliver of the far corners.

f/1.4

Lens is nearly mint but the hood is beat up a bit. Need to buy a replacement off eBay since the new ones still in stock no longer unscrew to accept Series VII filters.

Nice! I've noticed the ethereal qualities at f/1.4 vary greatly depending on the lighting.

Awesome! Mine is ~1983, but it also focuses to around 0.9m.

Yeah, like mentioned earlier in the thread it seems like its flare and characteristics are very predictable and reproducible.

Using this lens today I really cant understand why so many people dislike it. To me it feels perfect, and suuuper reasonable especially for 1300$ less than a used FLE ASPH.
