adan Posted December 31, 2021 Share #687 Posted December 31, 2021 Advertisement (gone after registration) Well, M4 or M10-R, it still shows off nicely the astigmatic coma of the pre-ASPH (the "wings" and "fans" on the streetlights), which give it its signature "glow."

Have I got astigmatic coma for you...... When I saw this, I laughed and put it on one side as a learning experience. I didn't realise I could gain credit for displaying the lens's signature glow😉 Christmas trees and street lights. M4, Summilux 35 v2, Tri-X Welcome, dear visitor! grahamc Posted January 1, 2022 Share #691 Posted January 1, 2022 (edited) I was using the lens with a yellow filter for a while and really like it. If I'm not mistaken, a yellow filter would add a little more contrast (as well as the obvious stuff like accentuating clouds) ? The purist in me doesn't know if that's a good idea but I've had some photos I really like with it M6J & Tri-X Welcome, dear visitor! In a nutshell, it will darken the blue most and other colours than yellow to a lesser extent. It will increase contrast between yellow (skin tones) and the rest. Nice shot by the way! In my book being able to use colour filters when shooting in black and white is a fundamental skill which photographers should understand and be able to utilise in order for them to realise their vision as and when deemed appropriate. There is nothing whatsoever 'unpure' about this approach at all. Carry On the Good Work, Graham! Philip.

The first time I ever really noticed coma in a picture was with a 28mm f/2.0 Nikkor Ai-S wide-open. Backlit snowflakes at night (far too long ago to still have the example). Probably due to pixel-peeping once I began scanning film (1997 or so). And the first magical thing I noticed about the 35mm Summilux ASPH v.1 was how completely it eliminated the "butterflies" compared to the 35mm Summicron-M v.4 (similar optics to the Summilux pre-ASPH). That was also with outdoor Xmas lights - the poor man's optical test bench.
