voightL Posted July 11, 2007 Share #104 Posted July 11, 2007 Leica virus is indeed very virulent! I'm new to rangefinder and new to Leica. Was using Canon dSLR until April this year when I bought a used R-D1s with a Cron 35 pre-asph. Now 3 months later, these are what's in my bag: M7, M8, R-D1s Elmarit24asph, Cron35pre-asph, Lux 50asph, Noctilux, Lux75, Cron90apo, Elmar90macro+macro adapter CV15heliar+jlm adapter+jlm filter adpter(on the way), CV28Ultron+jlm adapter, CV40NoktonSC, CV50Nokton What's in my dry cabinet are: EOS 5, EOS 1N, EOS 20D, EOS 5D EF 15 fisheye, EFS 60 macro, EF 100 macro, EF 180 L macro, EF 85 L II, EF 135 L, EF 300 L IS, EF 24-70 L, EF 70-200 L IS, EF 1.4x II, EF 2x Il What's next? Rona!d Posted July 11, 2007 Share #105 Posted July 11, 2007 So good for Leica company that the "new" customer does not think like HCB did (one lens, one body). Today you need two 28s, two 35s, two 50s, two 75s, two 90s ... plus all the exotic lenses (WATE, Tri-E, Nocti tec.) What about a second laptop when being "on tour"? (Must have something to do with the collectors gene!)

hankg Posted July 11, 2007 Share #109 Posted July 11, 2007 This thread is putting me to sleep: very useful at night, actually. I am always amazed that people have endless amounts of time to waste online lecturing other people about how they are wasting their time online. It's like going to a theater to see a movie that you know ahead of time you are going to hate and then commenting out load to the entire audience through the whole film about what a piece of crap it is. Peculiar behaviour - a lot of people seem to be entertained by this thread and that is justification enough for it's existence.

teehas53 Posted July 11, 2007 Share #111 Posted July 11, 2007 Personally, I hate having to many lenses... I wouldn't make any judgment on a photographers skill based on the equipment he does or does not own. True enough. As a relative Leica newbie, I'm always drawn to a small & light kit. That said, I have the lens disease too... Current favorite all-around is the CV 35/1.7 Asph Ultron w/ JLM adaptor. The somewhat low contrast is a perfect fit for the M8's dynamic range. And just a great overall look at any aperture. The daily bag also includes a 24/2.8 and 75 Cron. Least used is (somewhat surprisingly) the 28/2 Cron. A fabulous lens, I just don't seem to reach for it. Just getting to know the WATE (no Frankenfinder.) Used my coupon for it, and overall I'm impressed. I have a few other things in the main case, but won't bore everyone with a line-by-line list... T
hankg Posted July 11, 2007 Share #112 Posted July 11, 2007 True enough. As a relative Leica newbie, I'm always drawn to a small & light kit. That said, I have the lens disease too... When starting with a new system ( I came from Canon 1 to the M8) I go through a period of finding what works. I will usually go through buying and selling a few, sometimes quite a few lenses and spending quite a bit of time on line researching , trying to minimize the amount of churn and expense. After a few months of shooting I find what works for me. Once I have my 2 or 3 lenses, I am set, and don't give equipment much thought -until a good reason comes along to change platforms -which doesn't happen often. Guest guy_mancuso Posted July 11, 2007 Share #113 Posted July 11, 2007 Well change my lineup just traded my 35 lux for a brand new 35 cron. I tried one yesterday and also in Germany and really liked the cron so a new twist to the bag. had to buy a 39 filter now. I have 2 46 that have been on lenses and if anyone needs a slightly used 46mm just let me know. i think i have more extra filters than leica and B+W i have a ton. To lazy to list them on my site or here. LOL
sergiolov Posted July 11, 2007 Share #114 Posted July 11, 2007 My experience is that the proportion of good pictures shot is inversely proportional to the number of lenses one carries —Mitch/Potomac Mitch Alland's slideshow on Flickr Well, sometimes it's convenient to have a few lenses with you, don't you think? teehas53 Posted July 11, 2007 Share #115 Posted July 11, 2007 When starting with a new system... I go through a period of finding what works. Yes, Hank, me too. The dust settled more or less two months ago. I have some surplus gear for sure, but haven't taken steps to sell any off just yet. That's probably coming though. In my case, the M8 wasn't a change in platform, but an addition. T
Guest guy_mancuso Posted July 11, 2007 Share #116 Posted July 11, 2007 It's really hard to switch systems i have done it at least 5 times now and overall it just stinks going through it. I few folks bought my Leica filters which is great they can't seem to find them in there countries so a good day for them. better being used than sitting in a box
teehas53 Posted July 11, 2007 Share #117 Posted July 11, 2007 It's really hard to switch systems... I hear ya, brother! Wouldn't it be great to have less to think about, gear-wise? It's really not the equipment that makes the photograph... I guess it's all part of the fun though! I have to say I LOVE the files from this system! Sadly, I still have a few clients who expect to see a 5-pound Canon in my hands to be taken seriously as a pro. I have to keep those in their comfort zone, but there are others who couldn't care less what I'm shooting with as long as I'm getting the results... I'm getting to the point where all I want is clients in the latter category! T
Guest guy_mancuso Posted July 11, 2007 Share #118 Posted July 11, 2007 Tom I have run into the same thing after they have seen the DMR in my hands and i just explain it is basically the same just without a mirror and they seem happy about it . But yes they do expect the 5 lb brick. The image is all that counts and the M8 does produce great images. i honestly have been very happy with it , i admit i have had my moments though and being the early adopter in this has been interesting and what i see is all those folks that were on the same rowboat are still in the same rowboat. They certainly have patience i will give them that for sure and i believe leica loves them for it.
chris_livsey Posted July 11, 2007 Share #119 Posted July 11, 2007 Used an M6 for years with a 35 cron V4 Chrome happily longside the Blad system (40,50,80,100,150). Now with the M8 the disease has struck. I picked up a 28 2.8 cron ASPH as new from a dealer (part of an M7 kit he had taken in) with time left on the passport but not coded (yet) then couldn't resist a 50 lux (the older E43 filter size) on ebay. Made an offer I was comfortable with and ended up the only bidder, lovely glass with UV filter an orig hood that gives a great alternative look to the cron ASPH. Now debating between a 75 and a 90 and the variations therein. After running on a 12/120 the liberation of effectively no limit on shots is the main driver. I find I see more and take a shot rather than editing before taking, perhaps even unconciously, conserving the roll on the blad. I looked at the digital backs as I have probably spent that now (I dont add up, someone might notice) yes even higher quality, yes no limit on shooting but you do get fed up lugging the stuff about. I even cut back by taking a light meter on holiday to cut out the weight of the PME. Now I can sneek a lens in each pocket and enjoy. I did get a black M8 for a change (chrome M6) that may have been a mistake as I now covert an MP. This I rationalise as I have three lenses so a body for each. I did look at the 5D and my dealer wanted to sell me a 1DS II instead of a blad digital back but the feel just wasn't there. Its just that confidence in a quality tool you get with both the blad and the leica that gives you the chance to shoot with an extension to yourself not a lump of plastic in your hand. So in the bag : M8 mounted 28 ASPH cron, 35 V4 cron and older 50 lux . I like the variety of looks this gives. Tempted to add 90 ASPH but did I mention the 21 ASPH a local dealer has ? it's mint you know and not a silly price.
teehas53 Posted July 11, 2007 Share #120 Posted July 11, 2007 Guy - Thankfully, I only have a few clients for whom I still have to "put on the show." It's actually really nice to be able to work with simple, high quality tools that just get the results I'm looking for. Takes me back to my early days! I agree about the loneliness of being an early adopter (got my M8 in early December.) Seems like I've been luckier than most (no returns to the Fatherland,) but I've made a couple of purchases just before Leica announced that I should really have bought something else (anyone want a 67mm B+W IR/UV and factory WATE adaptor???) As you often say, I'm LOL... T
