Help with New SL

Hi All,

 

And thanks in advance for any help you may give. I purchased a SL and am trying to use my M lenses on it. The manual states that in manual, one may halfway depress the shutter release and then use the top button to adjust the speed and the rear thumb wheel to adjust the F stop. I cannot seem to get these things to happen. Could someone kindly describe the settings and process that is used to use an M lens? I have a 35mm Summilux mounted with the Leica adapter.

The f stop is adjusted on the M lens as on a M camera.

Welcome Ron,

What you are describing is only for SL native lens like the 24-90, 90-280 etc. Your manual M lens is only adjusted like it is still on an M body.

The way I use M lenses, is to set camera to A mode (aperture). 

 

If menu does not come up, go manually and name/set the M lens I am using on the camera. 

 

Focus wide open with either magnification or peaking turned on and then stop down to the aperture I want. 

 

I have my ISO set manually and not on auto. In the EXIF, the aperture is guessed at by the camera from knowing the max aperture of the lens mounted and comparing the lightmeter reading with that of an external light meter built into the SL. It is not always accurate.

I understand, so it is not necessary to set the aperature in the camers body itself? The body sets that itself?

The aperture for an M lens is set on the lens. It works mechanically by turning the aperture ring. The camera does nothing with aperture or focus on M lenses.

 

Also, when you inevitably question the aperture reading not matching exactly what you’ve set on the M lens, it’s a guess by the SL. It uses the small window on the front (opposite the grip) to compare the amount of ambient light to what the sensor sees.
