pico Posted July 15, 2018 Share #101 Posted July 15, 2018 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have always considered the lens shade as a protective bumper. I have replaced more for my various pre-asph 35mm Summilux than I remember. I will never go with a built-in lens shade.
Advertisement Posted July 15, 2018 Posted July 15, 2018 Hi pico, Take a look here 50mm APO with protection filter: Waste of money?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
M11 for me Posted July 16, 2018 Share #102 Posted July 16, 2018 For sunsets I take the Leica UV II filters off. Otherwise I just use them as the store just sold me the lenses inkl. the filters (that I paied for of course).
lexontario Posted July 16, 2018 Share #103 Posted July 16, 2018 (edited) I have a Leica MP240 with the Leica Strap that has the plastic retainer that slides over the steel wire that goes thru the body mounts. See pics below You may be able to see that I have sewn a thread through the strap so that the plastic retainer cannot slide out of position. Someone here seemed fairly confident that the plastic retainer clips and locks into place securely, and even if it did slide back the metal rig is designed in such a away that the strap is unlikely to come off. I know otherwise ! Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! RayD28 Posted July 17, 2018 Share #104 Posted July 17, 2018 I've always used uv filters and now also use external hoods whenever the lens comes of the shelf. (Except for 50mm 1.4 asph but I Lock the internal hood so it's always extended unless I have the cap on.). My question for those that are in the filter camp that also use bw uv filters, do you use single or multicoated. And why? Literature I read says the mc helps resist scratches. I also read someone say the extra coating increases the chance of flare. Your thoughts or opinion?

I will never go with a built-in lens shade. Do you have a suggestion for an external shade for a 50mm 1.4 asph? I've thought about a screw in hood but I heard they can damage the filter threads. M11 for me Posted July 17, 2018 Share #106 Posted July 17, 2018 I wouldn't buy an UV filter for protection now that the Nano-coated protective ones are available. Those are extra-thin to reduce hypothetical aberrations, extra tough and far more easy to keep clean. UV filters are designed to reduce UV light. They don't really reduce haze nowadays as claimed in your link, on any post-1960 lens. On film one would use an 1A filter for that (or a yellow/orange/red for B&W), on digital the Haze slider in postprocessing. As your lenses transmit very little if any UV, the only use I can envisage might be on the top of Mount Everest. Hi Jaapv, I just read your post again. Is what you say that I should not buy the Leica Filters for protection as they are UV and not Nano-coated. But Leica has nothing else.
jaapv Posted July 17, 2018 Share #107 Posted July 17, 2018 Advertisement (gone after registration) So buy some other brand. Leica does so as well. they don't produce a single filter themselves.
pedaes Posted July 17, 2018 Share #108 Posted July 17, 2018 Do you have a suggestion for an external shade for a 50mm 1.4 asph? I've thought about a screw in hood but I heard they can damage the filter threads. The $5 ones on e-bay work fine, and are so thin I can't see them damaging threads as I think the hood would bend first.
Steve Ash Posted July 17, 2018 Share #109 Posted July 17, 2018 (edited) So buy some other brand. Leica does so as well. they don't produce a single filter themselves. So what does that mean? I would suppose they buy to their own specification which could mean anything but all. Regards Steve Edited July 17, 2018 by Steve Ash
M11 for me Posted July 18, 2018 Share #110 Posted July 18, 2018 So what does that mean? I would suppose they buy to their own specification which could mean anything but all. Regards Steve Well take their ND 4 Stops: They are certainly absolutely not to be recommended. I could return mine to the dealer. The color shift is unacceptable to me. And I think its a disgrace that Leica does not cooperate with a better supplier. I started now with firecrest for a 10 stop filter 46mm. I am still missing some 3 or 4 stop filter and a 6 stop. All 46mm.
deeelite Posted October 10, 2018 Share #111 Posted October 10, 2018 (edited) I don't bother using a filter on my APO 50mm. The twist-out hood seems more than adequate for protection.
