Here are some more examples of just how much detail the 16-35 can deliver:

  • 2 weeks later...

Bought this lens from Leica Hamburg and initial impressions are excellent with very good corner sharpness at landscape apertures.

Will post some landscape shots when I come back from Romania, Germany and USA later this year.

No miracles.  The 16-35 is not parfocal (but it is not far off.)  I tested at about 5 m distance.  Focus wide open at 35 mm, then shift to 16 mm, and things look pretty good at f/8 or so, but open back up to f/3.5 and there is a little softness.  The Moire that looked pretty crisp at f/8 is now softened.  Re focusing at 15mm wide open sharpens it back to the way it looked at f/8.  Now shift the focal length to 35 mm, wide open (f/4.5) and the result is unacceptably soft.

So the old trick of focusing at the longest focal length before opening up will work in a pinch, but don't go the other way.

OK, so they seem to have managed to get a few demo 16-35mm lenses out (presumably from a test build batch), but where's the first real batch?  I suppose that I shouldn't hold my breath.  The 90mm is still not available, despite having been announced a couple of months before the 16-35mm, although here do seem to be one or two 75mm about.

Well, mine seems to have arrived, so the production line, that is rumoured to have been shut down by a power surge frying equipment, must be up and running...

Mine arrived yesterday. Unfortunately my SL is at Leica New Jersey getting a stuck Video Button fixed.
