I am thinking of buying a CL and using my M lenses. I understand that autofocus is inoperative but that does not worry me.. The question is - there appear to be a large number of adapters that can be bought so what is special about the Leica adaptor ? Are others as good ? Also one of my favourite lenses is my 40mm Summicron M. Can anyone kindly give me their opinion if they are using this lens on a CL ? any comments would be most welcome.

The only one that works properly is the Leica TL-M adapter With others the right wheel focus aid won’t work.

Many thanks but as I haven't bought the CL yet, Could you kindly explain the 'right wheel focus aid ' ?

+1 and image magnification works fine with the Summicron-C 40/2. Also 40mm allows to shoot both eyes open on the CL with a better accuracy than 35mm or 50mm lenses. Then in spite of its 60mm FoV, the 40/2 works like an almost perfect standard lens from this viewpoint. It is also one of the few lenses light enough to prevent the camera from tipping forward when it is mounted on it. I prefer the M-Rokkor 40/2 for Minolta CLE personally but when i carry only one lens with the CL it is often a 40mm due to this lack of tunnel vision. FWIW.

right wheel with magnification does work on CL on any lens with Leica TL to M adapter

I save the profile with the closest leica m lens selection manually, so i can update exif later

it even works when I add QBL to M adapter

I don't have a non-Leica adapter, but I'm puzzled why focus magnification on the right dial wouldn't work. The CL doesn't need information from the lens - all it needs to know is that a manual lens has been mounted. What happens to the right dial with a non-Leica adapter?

But it does need the input that a manual lens has been mounted, as transferred by the adapter. With a non-Leica adapter the dial does not trip the magnification. That goes for the R adapter as well.

Thanks for your helpful replies. It looks as if the 40mm Summicron will work well when I have bought the CL and the adapter.

It doesn't just work, it works excellently on the CL + Leica adapter. I would say second only to the Summicron 35asph - and by a small margin at that.

The right hand focus magnifier facility that comes with the Leica M adapter L is a good reason to use this plus a second adapter for non-M lenses. Novoflex now make a Contax to Leica  T/C/SL adapter, the LET-CONT. However, I have just been advised this morning by Novoflex, that this is a wholly passive adapter and will neither enable focus zoom with the right hand roller nor access to the R lens menu system. I am therefore going to stick to the theoretically less optically desirable practice, of stacking a Novoflex Contax to Leica M (LEM-CONT) onto a Leica M adapter L, to use my various Contax MF lenses on my SL and CL.
