Bentham Posted March 5, 2018 Share #1 Posted March 5, 2018 Advertisement (gone after registration) Wondering if anyone else has encountered the dreaded "black frame" issue when using their M10 (for reference: https://www.l-camera-forum.com/topic/259371-m246-captures-blank-images/page-1?hl=black%20frame)? Seems to happen to me with some regularity. The only "pattern" I've recognized is that it occurs most frequently when I first switch the camera on and do not half press the shutter (ie. engage the meter) before taking a photo. Is this user error?
Advertisement Posted March 5, 2018 Posted March 5, 2018 Hi Bentham, Take a look here Am I the only one seeing black frames?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
olli Posted March 5, 2018 Share #2 Posted March 5, 2018 My M10 produced 2 "black frames" last week for the first time. I´m sure it was not my fault.
UliWer Posted March 5, 2018 Share #3 Posted March 5, 2018 I had many black results one year ago with the first firmware and a wrong SD Card, since the update to firmware 1.7.4.0 I havn‘t seen a single one. You should report your experience with information about your firmware and the SD Card you use to Leica.
Bentham Posted March 5, 2018 Author Share #4 Posted March 5, 2018 Thanks. I just realized I'm using FW 1.9.4.0 ... will upgrade to the latest and see if that helps. My SD card is a 32GB Sandisk Extreme Pro 95MB/s.
a.noctilux Posted March 5, 2018 Share #5 Posted March 5, 2018 Thanks. I just realized I'm using FW 1.9.4.0 ... will upgrade to the latest and see if that helps. My SD card is a 32GB Sandisk Extreme Pro 95MB/s. To put it on the safe side, after M10 update to last firware, format your card IN the M10.
Bill W Posted March 6, 2018 Share #6 Posted March 6, 2018 I have 2 M10's and cannot remember ever having a black frame. I haver always updated to the latest firmware when it is released. I always format in the camera. I would guess a bad SD card. I use Sandisk for the most part and I have never had a card issue that I can recall. roblumba Posted March 7, 2018 Share #10 Posted March 7, 2018 The number of black frames depends on how many times you hit the shutter before taking the lens cap off.
a.noctilux Posted March 7, 2018 Share #11 Posted March 7, 2018 The number of black frames depends on how many times you hit the shutter before taking the lens cap off. Capped shuttering in "A" may be looonnngggg on M10. Not really true for multi numbers black frames, if one forgot not leaving "A" ...once only after waiting 4 minutes required time the shutter wait before closing .
roblumba Posted March 7, 2018 Share #12 Posted March 7, 2018 That would actually help me. I rarely use A and mainly use manual exposure and I at times I totally ignore the exposure meter. So black frames sometimes go unnoticed. Once or twice my subject tells me my lens cap is on! Thankfully I'm not being paid for this.
tobey bilek Posted March 8, 2018 Share #13 Posted March 8, 2018 I was at Tamarkin checking out a M10 and could not get a meter reading. When I complained, Dan took off the lens cap. Been using Leica m since 1980 so I should have known better.

Bentham Posted March 13, 2018 Author Share #15 Posted March 13, 2018 After upgrading to FW 1.10.4.0 I still get the occasional black frame. Would anyone be able to discern anything from a black frame .dng file if I attach one here?
a.noctilux Posted March 13, 2018 Share #16 Posted March 13, 2018 After upgrading to FW 1.10.4.0 I still get the occasional black frame. Would anyone be able to discern anything from a black frame .dng file if I attach one here? Was it another SD card ? Formated the SD card in exFAT format in a computer ? Then formated again in M10 before use ? If those answers are YES, I think that your M10 need to be sent to Leica.
Herr Barnack Posted March 14, 2018 Share #17 Posted March 14, 2018 I was at Tamarkin checking out a M10 and could not get a meter reading. When I complained, Dan took off the lens cap. This is why we can't have nice things around here.
