4X5B&W Posted March 4, 2018 Share #21  Posted March 4, 2018 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) Personally......I find my travel kit has come down to 2 lenses (the 28 Summaron - the new version, and the classic 50 Rigid),  so a 3rd lens just adds size, weight, and a mental distraction while framing images.  I find moving my feet is a better option than changing lenses.......it's all part of the image capture process !!  YMMV  But to answer the asked question here,  the 21 Super Elmar would be my third choice.........great lens !! Advertisement Posted March 4, 2018 Posted March 4, 2018 Hi 4X5B&W, Take a look here Best third Leica lens?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jmahto Posted March 4, 2018 Author Share #22  Posted March 4, 2018 Yes and then there is the difference between most chosen to go out with and most used. When I travel I never limit myself to three lenses and one body.  Perhaps it’s better that OP specifies the body where the lenses are attached to I was talking about digital M.
mmx_2 Posted March 4, 2018 Share #23  Posted March 4, 2018 SEM21! Can’t live without one. 21, 35 and 50. First you buy the 35, then the 50 and as a third lens, the SEM21!
colint544 Posted March 5, 2018 Share #24 Â Posted March 5, 2018 I generally carry a 50mm and a 28mm. The 35mm is my 'third' lens - it's the one I take if I just want one camera and lens. 90mm Tele-Elmarit is my fourth lens. It gets the least use. Â Agree with the previous poster - the Leica M is at its best with the 35/50/28 focal lengths.
Abram Posted March 5, 2018 Share #25 Â Posted March 5, 2018 My three are 21/35/50 With 21 and 35 being the main two and 50mm being the third wheel. I like wides in general so it's just more natural for me.
rsolomon Posted March 5, 2018 Share #26  Posted March 5, 2018 in my opinion this is the wrong approach. its  best IMO to decide on the full lens portfolio prior even your first lens. I understand not having the funds to purchase them all at once - I am in that situation myself, But how do you .... just buy a lens without thinking about your overall kit/system; I suppose someone fairly new to photography might be in this situation certainly most of us have been involved in photography  for many years.  my advice would be to plan out you kit fully, then execute it as you see fit, wouldn't you pick a different  lens portfolio if you were building a one lens, verse 2 or 3 or 4 lens kit ?
Mr.Q Posted March 5, 2018 Share #27 Â Posted March 5, 2018 Advertisement (gone after registration) If I were to start from scratch, I'd get the 50 Summilux ASPH first, followed by the 35 Summilux ASPH. The 3rd lens would probably be a 28 Elmarit ASPH or 90 Elmarit.
Exodies Posted March 5, 2018 Share #28 Â Posted March 5, 2018 My third lens is the one I intend to use most of the day. The other two are constants - always in the bag are hoodless 28mm Summaron and 90mm Summicron.
M11 for me Posted March 5, 2018 Share #29  Posted March 5, 2018 (edited) Lets continue with the 4th and 5th: These are the 35 Lux and (I have not yet) the (fifth) 21 SEM.  Together with the Cam I bought the 28 Cron and 50mm Lux (first and second). Then I added the (third) 75 Cron and (fourth) 35 Lux.  And with the fifth lens I am pulled back and fourth: Should I take instead the 16-35mm Canon with the 5D Mk IV (this is an excellent lens). But no: The Canon is too big. Or else (and now it comes even worse) should I leave the whole Leica stuff at home (for a 3 week Ireland photo trip) and just take 2 Canon lenses with the Mk IV body: 16-35mm and 24-70mm (plus just 3 Lee graduated filters for the sky). Then I have similar weight and more focal length for landscape plus real weather sealed lenses and body.  And the Leica was all about weight . . .  But sorry: When considering here the third lens the I would go for 28mm Cron, 50mm Lux and 75 Cron (depends on what you have already). That is how I did. And I would do exactly this again. Edited March 5, 2018 by Alex U.
Herr Barnack Posted March 5, 2018 Share #30  Posted March 5, 2018 (edited) SEM21! Can’t live without one. 21, 35 and 50. First you buy the 35, then the 50 and as a third lens, the SEM21!  The 21 Super Elmar is an awfully good lens for travel photography - I wouldn't travel without mine. But according to the title of the thread, we are supposed to be picking a third lens for travel, not a fourth and/or fifth.  When it comes to travel photography, perhaps three focal lengths just isn't enough for a lot of people. I don't think that means they are barren of vision, talent or imagination, though. Edited March 5, 2018 by Herr Barnack
ShivaYash Posted March 5, 2018 Share #31  Posted March 5, 2018 21. I don’t see the point of 75 or even 90 on a M.   Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

pico Posted March 5, 2018 Share #34 Â Posted March 5, 2018 (edited) How does it focus in your pocket? Â Hah! Perfectly. Seriously I keep in a pocket because I do not often use it. It is quite a challenge for me. Thanks for the chuckle and humbling. I needed that today. -- Pico in the wind waiting for a big storm. Tailwagger Posted March 5, 2018 Share #35  Posted March 5, 2018 (edited) My two primary lenses are the 35mm, 50mm and 75mm Summiluxes.... err my three, three most important optics are the 35, 50, 75mm Summiluxes and the 21 SEM... damn... my four principle pieces of glass, those I always want with me are the 35, 50, 75mm summiluxes, 21 SEM and the 90mm... arrrgghhh..  Cardinal Fang. Yes, if one carries four Leica lenses with faster apertures then there is no weight saving compared to Canikon FF body and zooms. This is why I think carrying more than three lens in a trip is overkill. I prefer going out with two, only one used and third one safely back at home. Â This weekend I went out in stormy weather for whole day hike and carried 40summicron-c on M240 and 90macro elmar in backpack. It was windy, hail, rain and snow off and on. There was no opportunity to change lens. Â Finally I came home with sore legs and satisfying pictures.
