Advertisement (gone after registration)

A large bouquet of roses arrived yesterday for my wife, yes, from me!  Gave me the opportunity to play lens swap with the SL more than I had before.  I shot the SL 50/1.4, Thambar-M 90/2.2 with central spot filter, Noctilux 50/0.95, Nikkor LTM 105/2.5, and SL 24-90.  Here are some of the similar shots for comparison.  These are all direct out of the camera with NO PP.

I now have a much higher respect for the SL 24-90!  But leave your own impressions please.

Yes, the 24/90 is really astonishing - even @ 90mm and wide open (handheld due to OIS)...

I am truly impressed with that lens.  I have been thinking about what to take with me this summer when I head to Germany for 10 days.  I will probably leave the M gear home and take the SL with 24-90 to keep simple!

Last summer, I took my SL w. just 24-90 to Milan. No regrets.

Last winter, I took SL + both native zooms + M10 w. 21lux & Noc. I was using SL + 24-90 90% of the time.

Sounds about right!  I've done the 2 body 5 lens combo and it's an effort to carry and I end up with a 50 on the camera 90% of the time.

i wonder what happened to white balance? Nikkor and Thambar pics are noticeably cooler than Noctilux and 1.4/75.

Other than that, it definitely shows that SL shines with its own lenses brighter that with anything else. Try 90-280, you will be even more impressed.

White balance was set to Auto throughout.

The Thambar pics were at 3400-3800K

The Summilux SL @ 3900K

Noctilux @ 3900-4050K

Nikkor LTM 3750K

75 Lux 3650K

SL 24-90 3650-3750K except for the last one at 3200K

 

Certainly, there is some difference in color rendering among the lenses, I shot these in my kitchen with LED lighting (cans in the ceiling).

Really? The WB only affects the in-camera JPEGs, so if you are adjusting in Lightroom afterwards, it doesn’t really matter what camera setting you used?

You are absolutely right, the WB irreversibly affects in-camera JPEGs. However, it has nothing to do with my statement where I explained how to use LR to figure out numerical values of a color cast introduced by a certain lens.

To clarify slightly -- When you shoot a raw file the pixel data, corrected in camera for vignetting and any lens-specific corrections, is passed along with an estimate of a color neutral setting, which is used as a starting point when you bring up the file in LR or C1 or whatever tool you prefer.  If you set white balance to "daylight", this setting is constant.  If you set AWB, the estimated neutral point will depend on the content of the picture, which makes it harder to compare the performance of lenses across different shots.
