What's with the best focal length stuff?

Who asks that? A total new-comer who knows nothing about the median from which to judge - a 50mm, or a totally disoriented consumer wishing to dive into photography wishing there were an advantaged focal length?

Let 'em work it their own.

Fair question as there is no 'best' focal length. The best for a chap like me that lives in the sticks is very different from someone that lives in a tight urban environment. Each to their own, chacun a son gout.

@pico: sums it up very well. These questions are a waste of time.

A good photographer can use any lens if they compose the shot correctly. Usually the correct lens will be apparent after a bit of practice.

My take has always been: One standard lens, one wide angle, one telephoto. There is no need for a store room full of lenses. If the subject is too far away, then move in. If the subject is too close then walk backwards. There are limitations! Don't step back over a cliff. Don't walk forward into the middle of a busy road!

Use common sense.  :)

Oh... I definitely think there is a best. A 50mm

er... Unless you think of the 35. Really quite nice.

But, let's not forget 28mm. I love the way it takes in the environment around my subject.

I was out with my personal favorite early today, the 75 Lux.

But then switched it out for my other personal best, the 90 Elmarit as I needed more reach.....

I guess we all get the idea. And it does, after all, give folks a chance to pontificate and talk about THEIR favorites.

I think it’s probably just people wanting to have a chat.

I agree but I think it’s a chat with people outside the forum. It’s quite simple to find and use lenses which appeal to you but a different type of problem to explain your choices in objective-sounding terms.

World would have been a best place to live if we all agreed that 28mm is best. Sad that people can't get along and accept all the wisdom that I have to offer to the world!

Edit: btw, this topic is is beyond M lens and should be moved to the bar where only few people read (bored with gloomy weather outside).

What's with all the "what's with all the ..." threads. A bit rude don't you think?

Sometimes it's nice to know what other people have found useful when you're going somewhere new. Like the mountains.

No one forces you to read the threads, they're pretty clearly labelled. I you don't feel like you wish to participate then my advice is to not read them or get over yourselves.

The problem is by the end of the threads, between us we will have suggested just about every option possible so I'm not sure how it helps anyone make their own decisions.

I asked this exactly this question yesterday in one of these threads. I think it was "What's the most ergonomic M lens" and I asked what the OP would do once every M lens had been suggested.

He said he'd see if there was a consensus, and learn from other people's experience.

Seems fair enough to me.

Yet you have read and responded to this one.

I think, question like this are often comes from those, who came to M from systems with zooms. Including mobile phone users. :)

Not having owned a zoom for years means that I know what I'm having for dinner tonight :).
