Take a look at what you mostly shoot, and how you crop them. That's for the focal length. Personally I use 35mm, because I like to shoot architecture and portrait. 35mm would allow a full body shot with a step back, or a detailed headshot if I get slightly closer or maybe crop out a bit. I used to shoot a lot with 50mm, so I know the limitations of it and what exactly I want. You should have some ideas if you have been using your Q.

Be ware though, the rangefinder lenses usually have a minimum focus distance of 70cm. That means if you shoot small still objects, to get the same reproduction size as you get on your Q, you will probably need a 35mm with some crop, or a 50mm.

Then you have to consider whether you are ok without AF, especially the lightning-fast SoTA AF on the Q. Btw, the MF is actually very intuitive if you play with it for a day.

Anyways, go to a Leica Store and try if it is possible.

About to pull the trigger on the M10. Realizing at the moment I'm only going to buy one Leica lens. As I mentioned in my original post, I've been using the Q for a while. When I look at my shots and crops...I'm always pushing into 35MM or 50mm range.

Realizing I am going to invest in a whole new system, I'm only going to buy one Leica lens. I've seen so many reviews and comments in various forums and blogs...my first lens is going to be a 35mm. So many opinions on the lux vs. cron.

For those of you who've faced this decision, has anyone purchased the cron and eventually switched to the lux?

I've heard great things about both. Most of my work is outdoors/street so I'm leaning towards the 2.0. Trusting the M10 has the DR to deal with a 2.0 indoors, I'm feeling like the cron is the way to go. Because the 50mm lux is going to be my next purchase within a couple of months.

Does this make sense to the Leica lens Vets out there?

35mm Summicron is giving me enough BOKEH, if that's what you are looking for. If you need speed, M10 actually has very good high ISO up to 6400.

If price is not a concern, go check out the size and weight. If possible, hold it, mount it, see if it works out for you.

I guess for 50mm the Summilux will be optimal, but for 35mm I am most happy with the Summicron.

I've been in love with my Q for over a year now, and am ready to make the leap to the M10. I shoot mostly street and some candid/portrait but no in studio work. I love the lens on the Q....so my initial thoughts were a 28mm and a 50mm....

Like many, I came from a Canon 5D system, went to the Fuji system (owned pretty much every lens fuji made), then discovered the Q....now I'm drinking the cool-aid like it's the last drink I'll ever consume!

For those of you Leica lens veterans, do you have any advice for me? lux or cron? anything to look out for?

I'm not opposed to buying used.

My plan is to sell or trade my Q for at least one of the lenses.

any advice would be greatly appreciated!

A 35 and a 90mm.  Which one depends on how much weight you want to carry.  A 35 Summicron and a 90 Elmarit would be great unless you'r after something faster.

Does 90mm means you have to focus with EVF or LV? Because even for 0.73 mag factor on M10, I find focusing only manageable up to 75mm.

I manage very well without the EVF.  The Leica M6 and M7 used to have 0.72 I think, and I was fine focussing a 90mm Summicron with those.

  • 2 weeks later...

To keep it simple only two-and-cheap-light-small-but-great-result:

Summarit-M 35mm and 75mm

or Elmarit-M asph. 28mm and Summarit-M 50mm or 75mm

Even if I think that limiting to only two lenses is too far limiting for my kind of photography.

35 and 75 (or maybe 90). Add a super wide later (21 or wider).

As mentioned by others - you know what you shoot and have good previous experience with Canon/Fuji.

For what it’s worth I use 35/1.4FLE, 75/2 primarily supplemented with a Voigt 15 MkIII. Very compact and versatile set up - body and three lenses fit in a bag that can only just fit a single 24-70 Canon lens...

Rigid Summicron and new apo - 50 mm is my view

Curious choice 😉.

I feel better now as I go to 50mm so often that sometimes I carry Summicron DR (with it's goggles in a pocket) AND along one more 50mm Noctilux 1.0 or Summilux-M😵.

The good thing is that I do use the two 50mm, I don't know why they are so different.

Other times: Tri-Elmar-M (28/35/50) and another 28mm or 35mm or 50mm 😂
