Question about SL

detachment due to sensor vibration would be shocking...but in these pics the edge looks kind of melted..like the sensor is heating up with long exposures on a hot day/night...gonna check my SL next time i swap lenses

That’s exactly what I thought it was.

However, both Leica Germany and Camera-Clinic Melbourne told me it’s the glue between the sensor cover and the edge frame of the sensor. I am so curious and will check a different SL in the store and see if it has the same condition.

 

I shall visit the Leica store, just to “check” the interior of the SL camera. [emoji23]

I took my SL into the dealers yesterday as it does have a sensor problem (see post HERE) and he was most surprised. It was the first sensor issue he had come across and in passing commented that the SL was from their point of view, trouble free.

I hope you get your camera back soon.

 

Luckily, I never experienced your issue and I had done around 9000 shots last year.

 

Speaking of corrupted DNG files and SD card. Has anyone ever felt that they might be missing photos? I got that feeling a few times. It felt like I remembered taking more than two photos of a certain scene, but there were only two photos exist on the SD card. I haven’t done anything to test it though,

BTW...Regarding corrupt photos on the SD card, you should never, ever delete photos directly from your SD card -in-camera'. You should only upload the photos to your computer that you want to use then reformat the card.

Deleting photos in camera is a major contributor to data loss/corruption and should never be done.

 

There are numerous articles all over the internet explaining "why".

I did a little further reading and found that the SL indeed is equipped with an ultrasonic auto sensor cleaning feature.

SL performs an ultrasonic sensor cleaning when turned on.

I checked my SL which is just over a year old and the sensor looks like it did brand new out of the box. As I have said, I would still have Leica consider a replacement. Who knows when the issue might spread.

I've not had this experience, and certainly never with the SL. I've been using the SL since day one with a pair of Sandisk Extreme 64 and a pair of Lexar 128 G high end SD cards. I manage exposures on the cards, in camera, quite a lot and format infrequently. I've not missed a single frame.

Oops, I felt asleep while half way editing my post last night.

 

I could be imagine it and was never a concern to me anyway. Maybe my head wants to take that extra frame or frames while my hand didn’t actually execute that command.

I read a few articles regarding how contiguous memory blocks can get fragmented simply by deleting files, and the potential for data corruption or loss.

 

 

I have no idea why this should be such a big deal, brad. It's extraordinarily easy to implement the delete file command on a FAT file system. I worked as an engineer in developer technical support and software/hardware development support for twenty seven years: in not one case that I can remember was a problem of data corruption the result of having used the delete file command.

 

In fact, more sneaky problems surfaced through poor implementations of the volume format commands than anything else that was derivative of file system implementation.

I do not have a macro lens but tried to get a close and in focus as I could with my iphone. Not much to tell here but on close inspection, I do not have any glue separation.

Yeah, I used my iPhone as well and zoom in on photos before I post it.

In the last photo of the entire sensor it looks different on the left and right sides.  Inconsistent application of the glue?  For what we pay for Leica I would think that these issues would be non-existant.

I love Leica performance and ergonomics and image quality.  What really concerns me is reliability.  When I owned only Canon I never carried a backup.  Now that I have the SL, I carry my Canon with at least one lens as backup because of everything that I read here.  For the price of Leica, we should all have superior confidence that the camera will not fail us.  Other than new lenses and extenders and maybe better flash compatibility, my main recommendation to Leica would be to improve reliability so that we can trust our gear wherever we travel.

 

Ain`t like Leica used to be.

They are always extremely helpful. Through them I have the feeling that Leica is always very appreciated on my feedback. 

So I strongly suggest you contact Leica center at New Jersey or through your local dealer. 

Better to be over causious than ignorant. After all, Leica have at least two tracking records on the sensor reliability. (Leica Digilux 2 and M9, both have Sony made sensor).

M9 sensor was originally made by Kodak. It is currently made on the same production line by the different company for which I know no name.

I probably read the same as you and I am not aware of any quality issues with the Leica SL.  FWIW 55K exposures so far and no issues.  

How do you know your number of exposures? I know it isn't possible to extract it from EXIF. Do you just estimate from the frame number? My latest is L120895 but I haven't shot 120,000 plus frames, I know.

 

The camera, by the way, is in excellent condition, no matter how many frames it's shot.

It's very easy to know how many exposures I've made with the SL: every SL exposure I've made has been loaded into my Lightroom database, I can tell how many I have by setting LR to display only original images and looking at the count.
