I noticed some area (the black stripe) around my SL’s sensor looks quite odd today. It looks like as if something has melted or whatever that is.

It has no effect on any photo, yet.

However, I am just curious and cautious to find out if these marks are normal, happening to everyone’s SL? Or if I should get Leica to check it for me before it gets worst?

Thanks in advance.

Using a loupe I could not see those marks around my SL sensor.

But why bother?

Respectfully,

Eric

Thanks Eric.

It looks like some parts of the black stripe around the sensor had melted. That’s why I am worried and didn’t know if it can get worst. Otherwise it doesn’t really bother me. :)

Thanks again for checking your SL and reply.

In the last photo of the entire sensor it looks different on the left and right sides.  Inconsistent application of the glue?  For what we pay for Leica I would think that these issues would be non-existant.

I love Leica performance and ergonomics and image quality.  What really concerns me is reliability.  When I owned only Canon I never carried a backup.  Now that I have the SL, I carry my Canon with at least one lens as backup because of everything that I read here.  For the price of Leica, we should all have superior confidence that the camera will not fail us.  Other than new lenses and extenders and maybe better flash compatibility, my main recommendation to Leica would be to improve reliability so that we can trust our gear wherever we travel.

Would you prefer there was too little glue and the cover glass fell off ?

The cosmetic appearance of the cameras interior is entirely irrelevant as long as it functions ok.

I think you will find remarkably few complaints about the reliability of the SL on this forum in comparison to other Leica gear. It is not the size and weight it is for nothing.

Going on specific photo trips or holidays without some form of back-up is foolish irrespective of how much you trust your gears reliability. Breakage or theft is a more likely scenario than camera failure.

What have you read here about SL reliability issues? I’m not aware of many, though perhaps I’ve missed them.

So far I have had no issues. My previous kits were Nikon and the forums would have you believe they were not reliable as well. I had a few issues over the years but nothing very concerning.

I would always carry a backup for any paid assignment and any planned trip or event that I deemed “once in a lifetime,” regardless of what is said in forums.

I've never looked this closely at the innards of my SL camera and likely never will. It's one of the first ones delivered in the USA, on release day in 2015, has turned over 17.000 exposures, and has worked flawlessly since new. Why worry about things that have never given any problems?

I probably read the same as you and I am not aware of any quality issues with the Leica SL.  FWIW 55K exposures so far and no issues.

Could it be that this appearant deterioration / failure ( at the border between sensor surface and the 'sensor'frame ) could possibly be a consequence of the automatic sensor cleaning feature.

Pure speculation on my part, since I am not at all familiar with the method of auto sensor cleaning actually employed in the SL, but I owned a Canon 5D Mk II and auto sensor cleaning in that device was done by vibrating the sensor at high frequency for a second or so when the camera was turned on / off. Mechanical vibration seems like a simple and effective way to perform this function, and assuming that's how it's accomplished in the SL, I'm curious if that might be a contributing factor.

Just thinking out loud, mind you, but if it were my camera I cartainly would want Leica to look at this and to identify and / or address whetever the problem seems to be.

detachment due to sensor vibration would be shocking...but in these pics the edge looks kind of melted..like the sensor is heating up with long exposures on a hot day/night...gonna check my SL next time i swap lenses

Thanks JZG.

However, I don’t recall SL does or can perform an auto sensor cleaning though.
