First time buying a used lens...just received it, took a few shots and wow...amazing quality.

It showed up with the box, an "import certificate" and a dry rotted rubber hood...the len body and glass are flawless. Clearly, somebody took good care of this before parting with it.  I'm looking forward to many exposures.

Many Congrats.

For its size and weight it offers very good performance in a wonderful little package which can be carried everywhere.

IMO it's a very underrated lens.

I, too, managed to find a near-mint example in box with (happily mint-condition, too) rubber lens hood. Instead of the rubber hood, though, I use either a regular 12525 (metal) or a 12538 (plastic) 35 / 50 hood - mainly for the better anti-knock protection offered. They are almost exactly the same depth and have almost exactly the same frontal diameter as the 11250 (rubber hood as supplied).

Internal flare has always been mentioned with this lens but I've yet to experience it behaving much differently from any other lens. YMMV, of course.

Oddly enough your lens engravings and box markings are slightly different to mine (perhaps because my one is slightly newer? 3068766).

Mine is engraved 'TELE-ELMARIT-M 1:2.8 / 90 LEITZ LENS MADE IN CANADA' on the  front locking ring; the serial number is engraved on the aperture ring 180 degrees 'round from the aperture markings.

As far as the box is concerned there is no 'Canada' on the top panel and I have the lens-barrel silhouette on both sides of the box; not one with the lens optical design.

Nice snap of the parrot!

Pip.

Yep - I just got (another) one of these. Back in the days I was transitioning from Contax G to Leica, it made it much easier to "give up" the very sweet little Contax 90mm Sonnar. It will be my "carry" when I want to avoid the weight of my regular 75/135 combo.

It will flare like a bandit if there is a bright light source (even bright sky) just outside the picture area - reflections off the inside of the barrel or focus cam, not the glass. It just requires a little attention to the lighting to avoid. I have never found a hood that completely solves this, even the longer 12575 one (which will mount reversed for compact storage): https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/51UFaKVWUHL._SY355_.jpg

Maybe there are 3rd-part 39mm screw-in hoods that do better. A well-placed hand can help, too. Just something to be aware of, when using this "small wonder."

Nevertheless, I can't be without one. Just the right size for Leica-M shooting. My best-selling photograph was made with the 90TE "thin" on an M8.

Mine doesnt flare at all..but has developed the dreaded..haze inside..

I don't see much of a difference in the pics though..

The only downside is..it's not too great in closeup range..but my favorite pic of my wife was taken with this lens..she used it on the rear cover of her book..

Interesting indeed. Mine flares a lot when strong light sources are not only outside but also inside the frame. Been using the "thin" Tele-Elmarit for 20+ years with great pleasure otherwise but it is outperformed by cheaper lenses like M-Rokkor 90/4 for Minolta CLE (pic) as far as flare is concerned, in my experience at least. Remains the smallest 90/2.8 ever made IINW.

Thanks for all of your comments...I came across this lens online right before I intended to purchase a new 90mm cron apo, suffice to say, I am enjoying the $3800 remaining in my pocket.

I've been using one for years, in fact it is my most modern 90mm lens, from 1976.  It is small, light and handy, and to my eye, gives very nice results.

I've just posted a pic taken with it on the "old glass on an MM" thread.

I have a “Made in Germany” version (last year of production AFAIK) and use the longer 12575 hood from the 90 macro. I haven’t had problems with flare much without it though so it may be that there was a modification to the interior finish to reduce internal reflections.....

I also use it often on a Fuji Xpro2 in lieu of the 540g Fuji f2 and get great results at f5.6 ish.....

With the hood reversed it’s not much larger than the 50 lux ASPH and is a great coat pocket lens!

Great little lens indeed. The 12575 hood was not made for it but became recommended very soon given the flare issues of the lens. My 12575 hood has been bought specially for the thin T-E and has always been in my bag since 1981. BTW people claiming that the thin T-E has no flare don't shoot into the light or have no experience with the lens IMHO. I have no info about the behavior of late German copies of the lens though.

People since the 80's..have complained about the flare of the lil 90..I never had that problem..always use the rubber shade that comes w/it..but..I don't make a habit of pointing it at the sun...

That said..my 60mm R Macro..will flare at the drop of a hat..even with the totally recessed elements..

My 90 TE..nope..

Well, lct, just from my own considerable experience, IMHO you are talking out of your arse.

YMMV.

Charming comment, thank you. Couple of boring test shots i took 12 years ago. The worst lens flare wise was the collapsible Elmar 90/4 then (no pic) and just after it the "thin" T-E 90/2.8 below. The earlier Elmarit 90/2.8 v1 (below) did much better. A bargain of a lens BTW. The very best 90mm lens flare wise was the M-Rokkor 90/4 then (no pic sorry).

I had a similar experience with the 90 Elmarit f2.8 as far as flare. I was able to get some good results with the earlier lens wide-open. I currently have the Tele-Elmarit "Fat" and it performs really well. I have not experienced any flare but I do use the hood.
