I love this camera and for me it's the perfect digital M despite the 0.68 viewfinder and large form factor body. If Leica wants to make a truly perfect and ground breaking M-D, based on the M10, I suggest one thing:

Remove the on/ off switch. (And the screen of course)

This could be the first digital camera without a on/ off switch. Of course it would require instant power on, opon pressing the shutter release or the camera should have a very low power consumption and stay on all the time. If Leica could pull this off it could be amazing. Is it possible?

In my opinion ... hey wait "déjà-vu" ... I stated this already, multiple times :D

Just for fun, sometimes I design upcoming M models in my mind and some paper. Last time was only days ago. So I will update my wish list about a future M-D

  • range finder with pure digital, dynamically, mirrored frame lines, changing in respect to the distance measured by laser with distance metering (no metal masks for mirroring frame lines); you will see the accurate frame line depending on measured distance
  • optical range finder with bigger magnification possible/useful? (1.0x?)
  • frame line selection switch with two (click-stop) options: "A" automatic (infrared for 6-bit coded lens), "M" manual for choosing your base frameline (28-135mm) by switch through M-side frame line options (28-135mm)
  • three standard, high capacity R6/AA batteries
  • sensor and electronics for ULV (ultra low-voltage) and well performing image processor engine, higher integrated, including image memory and buffer directly on the die (SoC, no external buffer chips)
  • shutter speed up to 1/8000 instead of 8s
  • NO "A" mode for shutter wheel: "A" will be the "OFF" mode like the M6 to deactivate the camera, so no camera-on/off switch needed
  • same buttom plate like the M4/6/7/MP/M-A, compatible with Leicavit buttom plate
  • manual shutter lever _OR_ rear click-able wheel for putting on the shutter again (because one button is needed for setting date/time)
  • small LED for showing under-/correct/over-exposure, date/time, and remaining images on SD card
  • only lossless DNG
  • no AUTO modes at all (no shutter priority, no exposure compensation because it's manual, no auto ISO)
  • sensor unit with some kind of ultra thin, ultrasonic cleaning system (dust)
  • maybe later special edition with sensor for black-and-white only (without color filter)

"BTW, I lost my bet back from 2014 about the dimensions (under six years). Because of that I will not have any money to fund my purch for new M camera or lenses. All will be spent for beer. OMG! N-o-o-o-o!"

And install mechanical shutter with lever advance. Battery will last forever.

Wow, I never thought of that and I think I would be happy to consider a camera like this if it increases battery life.  And I suppose it adds to the classic quaintness of its look too.

You will never, ever see a Leica M with a modular body.

I cannot ever see this happening either.  But theoretically it would be a brilliant idea.  We would be able to keep our long-running casings for life, and when an upgrade is available, we send our cameras in to have its insides upgraded.  I would love to be able to keep my M9-P body for life if I could upgrade it to an M10 on the inside.

You will never, ever see a Leica M with a modular body.

I was writing about digital module (insert) in film M Leica. Not about Rikoh digital modular system like.

Digital modules for film camera were done in the past by big names (Kodak) and individuals (Varyag on RFF with film M and digital module from DSLR camera).

More primitive and limited digital film modules are in the works as known startups.

I think, technologically Leica could do it, but they have to find out how to make it profitable. Why not to start with current film M cameras and offer digital insert with CL sensor for the price equal to CL camera as one option and FF digital insert as another option with heavier price tag.

Count me in as another happy M-D user. Here is what I would like for the next generation M-D:

--continue current look of black paint, top script engraving, and no red dot

--do not remove rear ISO dial in favor of the M10-style ISO knob; the rear dial is faster and easier to use

--keep the on/off lever with the additional settings for "C" and "timer" mode; but improve the action to make each selection have a firmer and cleaner detent

--keep the "A" option in the shutter speed dial; I want a digital M7, not a digital MP; having to manually exposure a digital camera for each shot is too much for me

--do not add an auto ISO option on the rear ISO dial

--consider a body covering more akin to vulcanite

--consider monochrome version

--8,000 top shutter speed

I think their biggest design decision will be the ISO selector. The rear wheel is consistent with the current M-D and with film bodies. The top knob is consistent with the M10 platform (and, in an indirect way, with the MP and the M3/M2). So there are good reasons to go either way. I do feel that from a usability standpoint the rear wheel is superior.

Overall it's a wonderful camera and I hope they continue the tradition into future digital M generations.

One option for Leica would be to keep the ISO dial on the back of the camera as with the current MD. Then turn the M10's top ISO dial into an exposure compensation dial.

I must say, a mechanically loaded shutter would be the coolest on an MD. It would be one of those "shut up and take my money" type of changes. IMO
