Thanks so much for this inspiring thread and your (Oxford?)-Pics!

It also shows how wisely Leica picked up traditional ways with the remake of this lens.

So I give up my critics about the old ergonomic barrel design...

Yes, Oxford. Good guess!

The regular city photos look terrible, the night shots are even worse! you don‘t need this lens if you take snapshots like that!

but i‘m really interested in seeing more photos. maybe there‘s someone here who has the right subjects..

We have some idea of what you don’t like but not enough information about what you consider “the right subjects”. However, I can’t imagine anyone really caring.

Everything I publish here is just meant to show use and potential. Not for aesthetic feedback and not for sale.

So if you want to see more you may just see what potential this lens can have for your use.

It seems to be a lens with a steep learning curve, primarily for portrait use (probably people more than objects) that gives an aesthetically different and pleasing background.  I don't care much for the results in more general use but interesting to see what it does.  Thanks Lik.

I wonder if this lens appeals to those with good eyesight more than say, the short sighted. Since about five years old I have had to struggle (too strong a word) against blur and I don’t see the attraction of pictures which look like I’ve taken my glasses off and not got close enough. I can see it’s not the same kind of indistinctness but it provokes the same frustration in me.

Way too much money to make a high resolution image machine look like an Instagram photo.

Sounds like that's your justification for not ordering one that you felt compelled to share with us with an added put down.  Was it really necessary?

Pete.

Instagram has a wide range of quality.

But I agree so far that also only 18 MP of an M9 would suit a Thambar very well  ;)

Hello again,

these days I have really very few opportunity to takes photos as I like - so I'm really sorry - again no portrait. They will come later.

Nevertheless I just stopped the car to take one and want to share with you one pic at 2.2, about 4 and 6.3 'ish all without center spot filter (let's call it CSF).

Of course it's not a APO Cron but I think the difference is remarkable and makes it also a choice for 90 mm "as usual" pics.

I`m afraid, I couldn`t find out so much more about the Thambar today.  After only a short period of sunshine, the day continued to be grey in grey .... this is too bad when you want to judge a lens that is so special like the Thambar.

So I went to the Christmas Market, to have some light sources. All pictures shot fully open with the filter:

This is an informing thread! I am very interested in soft-focus lenses and have my own for LF. Of course real soft focus lens outcome cannot be replicated with smearing a lens, There is something else happening and Leica, and perhaps  a few others understand enough to make them so.

My point is that soft focus is as scientific and nuanced as sharpness. Smearing, fuzz filters or anything added in front of a normal lens is not the same.

First one focused on the big lamp, second one out of focus:

My impression is, that portrait shooting isn`t so much different compared to many other lenses, as long as there aren`t any light sources. I would say, that faster non coated or single coated lenses would do the same job in that case. Light makes the big difference and let`s the Thambar shine.

Still fully open with filter, no light sources

Now in contrast, have a look at how sharp the Thambar is.

The following picutures are without filter, stopped down to f: 6,3
