tsleica Posted November 8, 2021 Share #1150 Posted November 8, 2021 (edited) Nice shots! I'm considering getting this lens.. But.. Has anyone done a direct comparison to the Lensbaby Velvet series? Those may even look a bit better to my eye..and at $300 to $500-.. And come in 28mm/56mm/85mm. Some pretty cool stuff is being done w/those.. Anyone have a Lensbaby Velvet for Nikon F, I could give it a try...
tsleica Posted November 11, 2021 Share #1154 Posted November 11, 2021 I have a Nikon to M adapter I never use.. Considering getting the Velvet soon try it.. For about 1/10th the price..you can get 2 Velvets in different focal lenghts.. And they look pretty good too..
Gerbs Posted November 11, 2021 Share #1155 Posted November 11, 2021 On B&H there's a nice bunch of user photos (for the 85mm Lensbaby at least). I did notice a couple had ugly fringing, just like with the Thambar it is possible to get ugly bokeh, in my opinion. But with care, as we've seen above, it can make emotionally charged photos. Ideally you have a willing model to put a lot of time into perfecting how you use it for portraits, LOL. I do like my Summarex a lot for carrying around, and use it a whole lot more often than the Thambar.

Some are soft some look out of focus, some look like motion blur , some look over glowed , some look flared, some have smooth Bokhe some have very disturbed Bokhe . I just don’t see a pattern? Initially, I didn't quite understand it either but after going thru a LOT of images, I get the purpose of this lens.. I think it's meant to be VERY artistic with all the quirks and qualities it offers.. not sure the bokeh can be replicated with any s/w.. meyer gorlitz series lenses probably can come close but I haven't used that either.. just going by what samples I have seen.. some of the "paint brush" like effects could probably be replicated by some really nice apps we get these days but again I am not sure if they look the same on a bigger screen or on a print.. on phones everything looks OK someday I might get one of these lenses.. just way too expensive that I can't justify for myself at the moment.. if they're available for rent, then maybe I'll try them out sometime.. I’ll probably look for one to rent somewhere if available
