That is much better than I was expecting when using it as a "normal" lens. It certainly is an intriguing beast. I'm sure I'd have a love/hate relationship with it.

Yes, stopped down it is as sharp as you wish it to be. I like the versatility of this lens so much !  Yet I haven`t practiced it very much with the CSF, which makes it even more diversified.

Has anyone tried getting an inexpensive UV filter for the 90/2 and painting an opaque dot in the center of the filter to see how the resulting images compare with the Thambar?  I know the results will not be identical, of course, since the optical design is quite different beyond the spot filter.  But it would be a fun experiment to run!

As mentioned previously, the Thambar is beyond what I'm prepared to spend out of curiosity, but I managed to find a 120mm Imagon set to experiment with something different from my (mostly) modern glass.  I found the Hasselblad mount set (with focusing helical and a Prontor Pro 1 shutter) that was in nice shape from a local dealer, although it was missing two of the discs and the hood.  Amazingly I found exactly what I was missing on the Bay from a dealer in Japan.  (Almost as if they were separated as children and now reunited by fate...)

Here's a photo of the rig on the M10.  Pardon the iPhone photo...

Since I have Leica R adapters for both the M10 and my Sony A7 mod backup body, I got a Hasselbad to Leica R adapter.  This is certainly not made for hand-holding since the pitch on the focus helical is very, very long.  But it seems to be properly functional.

I'll probably move the Imagon cell over to an Actus lensboard, since the rear of the cell is threaded for a Copal 1 shutter at 40mm 0.75 pitch.  The Imagon lens itself is about the side of an 80mm enlarging lens, so should fit nicely on the Actus, again with either the M10 or Sony as a back.  There is no need for the shutter for my purposes although I might keep a Copal 1 there just to be able to experiment with using the aperture control in conjunction with the discs.

I'll post two test shots subsequently...

Here's a test shot with the Imagon 120mm with the H9.5-11.5 disc with the holes closed (the H11.5 setting), using some flowers that happened to be sitting on the counter.  I was too lazy to drag out a tripod, so this is hand-held.  This is the disc with the smallest center hole, representing the least 'bloom' effect from the standard discs.

Next image will open up the outer holes on this disc...

Here's the same scene with the outer holes on the disc open and the exposure reduced by about 0.4 stops to hit a similar overall brightness. (Other than the square crop, these are basically as-shot.)

No conclusions about this, but it's going to be an interesting experiment.

Should I keep this in the Thambar thread, since it's in that theme, or would people prefer I took it somewhere else? If you like it here, just like this post and I'll treat that like a poll.

By the way, total investment in the Imagon so far is about 1/10 of the new Thambar cost. :-)

I'm interested to see more results from the Imagon, a lens I also looked at some years ago at the same time as the Thambar.

I don't feel precious about this thread (as long as people don't come here to repeat ad nauseam stale jokes about the Thambar). But I suggest starting a new thread with 'Imagon' in the title so it will be easier to search for and find as a resource about the lens - same as this one for the Thambar.

I agree with Paul.

The pictures from the Imagon are very interesting but incomparable in my view owing to the differences between the lenses and their renderings; I'd be disappointed if the thread deteriorated into a Thambar vs Imagon thread.  Having a separate Imagon thread would make Imagon pictures easier to find rather than being buried in a Thambar thread.

Pete.

This is an example taken with my MM1 - just for comparison reasons. First image taken at f/2.3, second image at f/6.3, both with CSF.
