MarkP Posted November 26, 2017 Share #21 Posted November 26, 2017 Advertisement (gone after registration) Exactly why most of us have mentioned the 28 Summicron ASPH. There is no real difference between the 'look' or rendering of these two 28mm lenses. The difference is the new hood and slightly better optical correction (esp the corners). I must say, that in most of the photos I took when testing it, I could not pick the difference between the two. A well respected Leica dealer in the US advised me that I would be wasting my money upgrading for any 'real' optical benefit. That doesn't mean I won't do so at some time :-)
Advertisement Posted November 26, 2017 Posted November 26, 2017 Hi MarkP, Take a look here Possible 28mm companion for a 50 Lux Asph. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Herr Barnack Posted November 26, 2017 Share #22 Posted November 26, 2017 (edited) Many here have endorsed the 28 Summicron ASPH (#11672) as a good compliment to the 50 Summilux ASPH. I would not dispute this but I have to wonder why there is little love for the 28 Elmarit ASPH (#11677) for the same role? The 28 Elmarit #11677 would seem to be a good fit too as it is a very sharp and contrasty lens - qualities that the 50 Summilux ASPH #11891 is well known for. Is the 28 Summicron favored over the 28 Elmarit due to the one extra stop of speed, or are there other reasons? james.liam Posted November 26, 2017 Share #23 Posted November 26, 2017 Pete, I’m looking for a harmonious pair of lenses. Similar rendering. You might find that a synchrony of “look” across focal lengths becoming monotonous over time.

Extra stop indeed and the Summicron 28 is slightly less contrasty but the Elmarit 28 asph matches very well the Summilux 50 asph IMHO. Great combo although i prefer 28/2.8 asph + 50/2.8 v2 personally but it is a matter of taste and size certainly. About 28/2 v2 vs 28/2 v1, corners are indeed sharper with v2 when focusing at infinity and the built-in hood is really handy but otherwise i don't see significant differences i must say. YMMV. rramesh Posted November 26, 2017 Share #25 Posted November 26, 2017 The 28 Cron is my primary lens. All other lenses will compliment it.

Last one to be prised from our cold dead hands! Do you still have v1? Edited November 26, 2017 by MarkP

Yes, a fantastic lite set - my avatar in case you hadn't seen. 2.8/28 Elmarit-M & 2.8/50 Elmarit-M and the 4.0/90 Macro-Elmar-M (although the high contrast of the 28 does set it a little apart from the other two lenses here. MarkP Posted November 26, 2017 Share #28 Posted November 26, 2017 Is the 28 Summicron favored over the 28 Elmarit due to the one extra stop of speed, or are there other reasons? Unlike Tim Astley (but each to their own), why unrelated to the extra stop many of us really like the 28 Summicron ASPH... https://www.l-camera-forum.com/topic/210636-tim-ashley-on-m240-and-28-cron/ My take on it starts page 2, post #28 Mark
rramesh Posted November 26, 2017 Share #29 Posted November 26, 2017 That seems to be how it works with me. Last one to be prised from our cold dead hands! Do you still have v1? Still with the V1. Other than cosmetic, I did not discern any major improvement with the V2.
MarkP Posted November 26, 2017 Share #30 Posted November 26, 2017 Still with the V1. Other than cosmetic, I did not discern any major improvement with the V2. Agreed, but if I got a reasonable price for mine and my rare and very overpriced metal scalloped 12466 hood I'd probably upgrade. https://www.l-camera-forum.com/topic/151463-leica-12589-vs-12466-replacement-hood-for-35-lux-asph-old/
M11 for me Posted November 26, 2017 Share #31 Posted November 26, 2017 If I would be at the point a year ago I would much more consider weight over the speed of my lenses. Still I would not miss at least one fast lens for dawn light in towns or when I really want to produce shallow depth of field. Normally I prefer an aperture that would not make the focusing too critical. That would be f/2.8 or even 4.
oldwino Posted November 26, 2017 Author Share #32 Posted November 26, 2017 Thank you everyone for the comments and suggestions. I appreciate the discussion. I will now start saving my pennies for the 28/2...

colint544 Posted November 27, 2017 Share #34 Posted November 27, 2017 As others have said, the rendering of the 28mm Summicron ASPH and 50mm Summilux ASPH are comparable. If you have that combination - two of Leica's finest lenses - you have a flexible and compact travel kit. You can photograph pretty much anything, the only real limit being your imagination.
