Csacwp Posted October 24, 2017 Share #1 Posted October 24, 2017 Advertisement (gone after registration) This December-February I will be going on the trip of a lifetime to Italy and Spain. I’ll be renting a car and driving through the less often explored regions of both countries. For a year now I have been itching to shoot medium format as I only do formal portraits and some landscape, but so far I have not bought into a MF system as I wanted to see where they are heading. I currently have an SL with a 50 apo, 75 lux, and 90 apo. I use the 50 for landscapes and some portraits, the 75 lux for portraiture, and the 90 apo for portraits and landscapes when called for. I love the way the 28 Summilux renders, and a wider lens would be useful for my landscape work. Should I buy one to round off my M lens kit before going on this trip, or should I get a GFX 50s with the 63mm lens? Back home I’d only use the Fuji for portrait shoots, so I wouldn’t buy a wide angle for it... just the 63mm and later the 110mm.
Advertisement Posted October 24, 2017 Posted October 24, 2017 Hi Csacwp, Take a look here 28mm Summilux or GFX 50s. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
fsprow Posted October 24, 2017 Share #2 Posted October 24, 2017 I personally find the ergonomics of the GFX not to my liking at all. The Hasselblad X1D or a Leica S works much better in my hands.
tom0511 Posted October 24, 2017 Share #3 Posted October 24, 2017 If you buy a new system do it with enough time to learn and test it before going on vacation. I own SL and S007 and must say specially for Italy and Spain a camera which is not too big and where you can shoot spontanious and also in low light is an advantage. I just spent a week in Italy and did not bring my S but the SL and TL2 (and used SL+24-90 most of the time). I am not sure if I would spend the money for a 28/1.4, for me the Summicron is fast enough, and for the SL I would rather spend the money towards a 24-90, which gives you AF,IS and a lot of flexibility. But thats me and if you love the look of the 28/1.4 I would buy that lens and bring your SL with those nice lenses you allready own. I have handled a Fuji at Photokina but didnt like its design, too bulky and boxy for my taste.
M11 for me Posted October 24, 2017 Share #4 Posted October 24, 2017 Just for my interest: I wonder why you do not evaluate a Nikon D850 or a Canon 5D MkIV? Mainly the new D850 renders on the level of MF sensor. Any technical specs show that the sensors of the 2 mentioned are excellent and above the specs of the Leica sensors (as far as the specs are known). The lenses are excellent as well. This might sound a bit provocative but it is not meant like that. Just note that I own an M10 because of weight and size. And beauty and history and precision of rangefinder and handling and simplicity. Plus the excellent small lenses.
Csacwp Posted October 24, 2017 Author Share #5 Posted October 24, 2017 I’m interested in the Lux and not the Cron due to the moody/dark rendering at f/1.4 and f/2. I’m not interested in Canikon DSLR’s for a number of reasons. The D850 sensor is not on par with MF sensors.. I lacks the color reproduction and falloff of out of focus areas that define the MF look. Nikon lenses aren’t up to snuff anyways, and Otus lenses are huge and manual focus... I’d rather use my 50 apo. Lastly, the mirror shake is an issue. Csacwp Posted October 25, 2017 Author Share #6 Posted October 25, 2017 Went with the 28 lux as I found a brand new one (unopened) for sale from a reputable dealer for $5500. Can’t beat that. I imagine I’ll have more fun shooting landscapes and doing long exposures with the 28mm than I would have had with the GFX 50s and the 63mm. And If I want a standard focal length that’s razor sharp, I still have my 50 apo.

RoySmith Posted October 25, 2017 Share #8 Posted October 25, 2017 You’ll love the 28 lux on the SL. It’s great for indoor and low light use. Sean Reid thought it was a bit better on the SL than on the M series. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
StevieB Posted October 25, 2017 Share #9 Posted October 25, 2017 If you already have all the answers why bother asking the question? You were always the old Meanie! So what if someone has made their mind up and wants to get positive feedback?
m2man Posted October 26, 2017 Share #10 Posted October 26, 2017 If 50mm is your widest then 28 Lux would be great. Awesome lens. Except then you'll want the 21 SEM. (Next on my list)
FlashGordonPhotography Posted October 28, 2017 Share #11 Posted October 28, 2017 Tough choice. I have just returned from a trip to Cuba. I decided to take and shoot my X1D over my M and S systems. I was very pleased with my decision and love the files I'm getting. Another person on the trip shot wonderful shots with his M10 and 28 'cron. I'm still happy mine stayed at home. We also had someone with the GFX in our group. If I were travelling I'd get the zoom rather than the 63mm. I dearly wished the X1D zoom had been available. The Fuji zoom is exceptional as well and not that much bigger that it's an issue. Then you'd have a 25-51 equivalent for landscapes and your fast 50, 75, 90 combo for people and occasional longer landscapes. Whatever you do don't look at the 110mm f2. It's stellar and you'll just end up buying it. A sublime portrait lens. The person on out trip with the GFX also had his SL (too much stuff for me but he seemed happy carrying both). He was unsure about the GFX but seemed, by the latter part of the trip more than happy with the files and camera. Gordon
Tailwagger Posted October 30, 2017 Share #12 Posted October 30, 2017 While its easily to understand the desire for MF, one has to wonder if a single normal lens is the appropriate choice. In my experience bodies come and go, but lenses are forever. Adding or replacing a system is a serious decision, certainly one where the true value requires thinking in longer terms than a single trip, regardless of how special it might be. Unless I was seeing myself spending a lot of time shooting MF going forward, I'd opt for the lens, especially if the widest focal length I had currently available was 50mm.
