Keep the S and X1D and bin the rest Bill.............FF just doesn't cut it anymore :) :)

That will get them jumping in the bleachers :) :)

That probably will not happen. I took some of the best images ever in Scotland with my SL and the M10. My problem is you consider it a problem is I tend to use one camera system for a while and will have forgotten the controls on another when I pick it up. Ii keeps me thinking thats for sure but I am retired and it is what I do......

Just stumbled on this topic, and reading all the many posts with amusement.

Owned X1d for awhile. Reasonably happy with it but it’s not perfect by a long shot. The firmware updates have improved it massively. I love the IQ in color, better than any other digital camera I have owned, but note have not an S. The build quality is no where near a Leica and I intend to stay with Leica mostly along with the X1d.

Just wanted to comment mainly on the M to X1d adapter. I bought it. It isn’t meant to use the full image. So complaining about vignetting is peculiar to me. Have to crop it. I certainly prefer my X1d lenses, of course. But as long as I have several M lenses, gives you options. No way does the X1d replace my M for now for using these lenses. I haven’t done any side by side comparison of cropped images with the adapter on the X1d vs images on my M, but will do in the future.

Thanks Neil,

Perhaps my struggle going from one camera to another keeps my brain active. It certainly needs it some days. I harken back to the days when I had a Nikon F Photomic and I did my own from processing. Hmmmmm maybe not. I also had a darkroom set up in a bathroom. "Was not married at the time" Now that was really fun. I do need to sell that R6.2 because I am not going to try film again. Obviously new shinny things attract me. I have been fortunate in life and have the resources to do a lot of stupid things up to the point the boss "wife" steps in....!

Playing with the HC 100mm and AF yesterday. Would you know that the HC lens I really wanted AF with is the one they gave me. Thanks Hasselblad. :) It works really well. I read where they said they optimised it for accuracy and not speed. I was expecting little but it's pretty decent AF speed. Not quite as quick as the same lens on the 007 (I have the adaptor for that) but quicker than the native SL50 on the SL.

Pleased....

Once you have yours and then go to pick up a 35mm camera you'll see you're not joking. :)

The S feels like a bigger camera with bigger lenses. The X1D is like holding a smaller than SL body. And because it's so light when you carry it on a sling strap it has less impact than an M and 50mm.

I only mention the M lenses because there's been so much speculation about whether they have a big enough image circle to cover the X1D. Sure you can crop them and get 30ish MP but without the Leica microlenses...... Maybe the 90 and 135....

I'm interested why you feel the X1D isn't as nicely made as a Leica. I don't see it this way. Is it the rubber grip, maybe? Or maybe the lack of weight makes it feel less solid? It has similar construction to the SL or TL (carved block of aluminium). Build quality is one of the things I like about the X1D.

I agree on the build quality. I was only allowed to inspect it briefly before it got wrapped and under the tree. I was duly impressed and really like the size and weight. Will know more on Monday.... :p

It's an f2.2.

The XC 90mm is sharper across the frame and has less aberrations. The HC100mm is good at 2.2 but not great. It is much much better by 2.8 though it never quite reaches the 90mm. The 100mm is a true old school portrait lens. Gentle wide open and then razor stopped down. The 90mm is just sharp, all the time. You're also doubling the size and weight once you add the adaptor. So for teavel the 90mm wins.

Also the 100mm Hasselblad isn't in the same league as the Leica S100mm f2. That's the best there is. But since I paid 1/3 the cost of the S version for my brand new 100mm I'll live with it.

There's an XC80mm coming next year. That's the lens I want. If Leica make a mirrorless S008 with no LENR I'll probably sell the HC100mm and get the Leica S100 for portraits and the shorter XC80mm for the X1D. If not I'll keep the HC100mm and not bother with the next Leica S.

Thanks Gordon

My favorite lens on the S is the S120, I used that about 90% of the time while I was in Japan and maybe the other 10% was shared between 70 & 30mm with very few with the 30mm.

I’m not sure if the XCR120mm is ready available but I’m thinking that I will get that first with the X1D and either the 45 or the 30mm but not both.

For landscape I enjoy taking maybe 1/2 dozen shots with my 120mm and stitch them........ maybe I would be better getting 120 and 90 and an adapter for my V40mm ......... can’t remember what hey call it but it’s big CMC maybe I can’t remember

Let me look on B&H and see if they have the 120mm

Remember, Neil, that the X1D has a different aspect ratio (4:3) than the S (3:2), so you may find that you eventually prefer somewhat different focal lengths/ fields of view.

Jeff

For my understanding Jeff would that make the FOV of say the 120 XCD lens look more like a 150mm in the S lenses.............in other words if I prefer the look of say the S120mm then the 90mm XCD lens might fit my eye better.

I know when I have cropped my S images to the 4:3 ratio they certainly look tighter

I ordered a Black 4116 Edition X1D and 45mm lens on Wednesday for overnight shipping.  No sight of it yet, but I have been assured it will arrive tomorrow.  I am anxious to shoot it alongside the S007 and SL to see for myself if it measures up.  I am confident it will fare well against the SL, but against the S007?  Well, that would be impressive, indeed, if it does.

First, let me preface that I am a fan of the X1d and not trashing it by comparing it to Leica. But in no way do I feel is built as well as a Leica. Just look at the recent posts about the SD card slot door hinge cracking. And the body scratches super easily. So, best to treat it with little more care. I do love the design and how it feels in the hands. Why do we have to argue this?

I understand the concept, but I disagree, in a way, with the statement that a better camera doesn't make one a better photographer. I go back to my days as a serious woodworker.

Several years ago, my wife and I owned an antiques store, which she ran while I was out making money to support it. Occasionally, a chair, a table, or some other piece of furniture would need repair work before we could put it out on the floor for sale. When we first started in the business, we would hire that work done, but gradually, by observing the work of others, subscribing to a few publications, watching several DVDs (before YouTube), and with many hours of practice I gained the confidence needed to take on those repair projects myself. It was fun, and it gave me the opportunity to do something creative while "saving" money by not having to hire professionals to do the work.

Before long, I convinced myself, and more importantly, my wife, that I should build a shop. I did, and then I picked up a few basic tools - mostly Craftsman hand tools and Black and Decker power tools, an inexpensive table saw, a simple band saw, and an old shop lathe for turning. All of those tools did the job they were supposed to do; I could saw a block of wood, shape it on the lathe, refine it with the hand tools, and eventually end up with a finished product that would serve as a replacement part for the broken one. My reward was having my wife (and others) tell me convincingly that they could not distinguish the replaced part from the original.

My confidence grew, and as it did my appetite for further learning and development also grew. I subscribed to Fine Woodworking Magazine, I went to trade shows, I hung out with other craftsmen, and I discovered Highland Hardware in Atlanta, Georgia, a store with a mission to fan the flames of interest and excitement in the craft of woodworking. I began to discover finer tools designed to do the same work that I was currently performing, but in a slightly different and more enjoyable manner. There was something magical about those tools. They were sharper, they felt better in my hands, they were made of quality materials, they looked better, they were built to last. With better tools came improved skills and more confidence, and as they grew so did my passion for the "work."

Things change, and fifteen years ago I moved to Florida and gave up my woodworking shop. Needing another hobby, I took up photography. Much safer and less expensive, so I thought. Not exactly.

My first camera was a Nikon D70 that had a whopping 6.1MP sensor. The surface of that camera is just a little sticky, but I still have it. I have owned many cameras since the D70, and each one has made me a better photographer, because each one, with few exceptions, has have been sharper, has felt better in my hands, was made of quality materials, looked better, and was built to last, technological obsolescence notwithstanding.

Just as I found with new and improved woodworking tools, each new camera refuels my passion for photography, and it is the passion that leads to improved skills and more confidence in the work. I don't see that you can separate the tool from improvements in the end result.

I bought a very nice cello in 2010. I immediately sounded better, although I had to adapt my playing because the cello was so responsive, it exposed every mistake I made. Just like a good camera and lens.

So, a better camera will make one's work better, but if the work is not good to begin with, it will not magically become good.

Congrats. I ordered mine on Sunday from B&H and paid for the 1 day saver. It shipped on Monday and arrived Tuesday at 10:30 my time. Very quick service by UPS. Hope you get yours before Christmas.

Bill,

I have not been so fortunate.  I ordered from Amazon on Wednesday, and paid for one-day shipping, expecting the package to arrive on Thursday.  It did not, and so I contacted Amazon late Thursday, and received assurance from the agent that it would arrive today.  Late this afternoon, realizing that it would not arrive today, I contacted Amazon again, and a different agent assured me that the package would arrive tomorrow (Saturday).  Within an hour, I received a follow-up call from a third Amazon agent to confirm my shipping address, which was a pretty good indicator that it will not arrive tomorrow.

I was right.  Shortly after my conversation with the agent, I get a UPS tracking number which shows a scheduled delivery day for Tuesday.  That will mean that it will have taken six days for a next-day package.  I understand that Amazon and UPS are covered up due to Christmas rush, but still six days!?   If I had ordered new underwear, I wouldn't be so concerned.  But a new camera?  That is an entirely different matter.

Merry Christmas!
