Guest NEIL-D-WILLIAMS Posted December 19, 2017 Share #141 Posted December 19, 2017 Advertisement (gone after registration) Does the shutter sound any better (not electronic)? Is there any issue with heat? What about ease of moving focus point without back button? Thanks, Jeff i likes the shutter sound........ different but plesent to listen to. The example I tried did not feel hot or even warm for the 15 minutes that I had a play with it. The example that I tried had no moving focus point from what I can remember....... or maybe it did can’t remember Neil

Guest Posted December 19, 2017 Share #143 Posted December 19, 2017 Hi Jeff, Still not Gordon but I’ll share my severely narrow perspective. Shutter still sounds metallic abrasive and glaring. No heat issues ... none. Moving the AF or magnification point is like using a track pad ... finger on and slide to point of interest. Very focused at this point in time. I tolerate the shutter because everything else is good enough ... better than most other choices. Bob
Guest Posted December 19, 2017 Share #144 Posted December 19, 2017 Okay so here is my take on it. I have been shooting the Leica S006 then S007 for around 2 years now. I have also been shooting Leica SL durning that time. But whenever I go out to shoot something important to me, weather that be a pretty model, a beautiful landscape or anywhere where I want the best IQ I ALWAYS take the S with S lenses...........I would be crazy not to I just went to Japan for 8 days and initially thought about taking the TL2 but my sensible head kicked in and said don't be stupid, take the best that you already have, so I took the S and glad that i did Pictures here I sold the SL because the IQ of the SL files compared to the S007 files is like "carrots and pigs trotters" in other words there is no comparison. I miss the SL for one thing only and that is it was good for me to shoot Noctilux and get all those squiggly bits that I like...........I have now managed to get some squiggly bits with my S120 under certain lighting conditions so it now looks like I will also let the Noctilux and my other M lenses go (I will keep the 50mm Elmar M) as that puppy looks sexy on my TL2. I have no intentions of selling off my S gear as I just know that one day Leica with get there heads out of there a$$es and listen to what the medium format guys are asking for and give us a mirrorless small compact S with 80+ megabytes ...............Kind of like Hasselblad have done with there X1D. I will buy a X1D field kit to use in the meantime while waiting for the paragraph above to material girl. We will then see if the new S will be compatible with the current S lenses (hopefully the new mirrorless S will have small lenses to go with it) again like the X1D I just need Raymond to get his head out of his a$$ and come up with some realistic numbers for my gear that I will be trading in for the X1D. I still have over 3 weeks before I get home so I am not panicking yet Neil Neil, This may sound a bit strange ... coming from a X1D owner ...ex-S ( 3 times ) owner but I think if you are keeping the S then buying the X1D would be a mistake ... don’t misunderstand me ... the X1D is great but it cannot function as a backup for the S. Lighter yes but honestly that is not the issue for you or me. Live view on the S 007 equates to the view on the X1D ... add a Zacuto gratical EVF and you leave it in the dust. We’re you to drop the S and lenses ... makes more sense but to support and work with two systems may not make your photography any better. I love new car smell as much as anyone but the S is very fine and the X1D offers little imaging and lens wise that you cannot get with the S. Now a Phase One Achromatic 100 would add a bit to your universe Bob
Jeff S Posted December 19, 2017 Share #145 Posted December 19, 2017 Hi Jeff, Still not Gordon but I’ll share my severely narrow perspective. Shutter still sounds metallic abrasive and glaring. Bob Yep, the multiple clank shutter action that I experienced with an early model was among the worst of any digital I've used. The antithesis of the camera's truly elegant form factor. I can't see the practicality of the moving focus with eye to finder and handheld, which would be the benefit of having a compact 'medium format' for me. Otherwise, with tripod, I might as well use a bigger system. I'll also need to revisit the EVF. My initial reaction was ok, but not SL-like. I want to like this camera.... just not convinced yet. But heading in the right direction. I'm sure Ming is having some influence. Will also be interesting to follow the lens rollout, including the zoom(s). I'm a believer in using native lenses for any system I commit to. Jeff
FlashGordonPhotography Posted December 20, 2017 Share #146 Posted December 20, 2017 (edited) Gordon? Jeff Yes Jeff? I don't worry about the shutter sound any more. It's no Leica, for sure and it's different but in the field it doesn't actually draw any attention. Not a shutter I'd want to fire during a wedding ceremony. But it's significantly quieter than the S. Touchpad AF is fantastic. I want it on all my cameras now. Faster than using a joystick. Wonderful. When using the rear screen you still use the touch focus like on the TL system. Touchpad is for when you're using the EVF. With extended use the camera does get warm. I noticed it in Cuba. It wasn't uncomfortable but it's there. It's supposed to be the whole body is a heat sink for the sensor. Uploaded the recent firmware. Exposure review in the viewfinder is still pretty basic. Can't zoom in yet. AF with HC lenses works really well. Of my HC lenses only the 100mm is on the list but it works great. And my HC lenses work on my S body as well. Slowly processing my Cuba trip photos... https://www.flickr.com/photos/42362981@N08/albums/72157682304320384 I have the Canon EF adaptor. TS lenses work brilliantly. Sigma 85 Art is incredible. Also have the M adaptor but have yet to use it. Gordon Edited December 20, 2017 by FlashGordonPhotography
Bill W Posted December 20, 2017 Share #147 Posted December 20, 2017 Advertisement (gone after registration) My X1D arrived today and I did get to "inspect" it before it got wrapped. It is surprisingly smaller that I though tit would be. That is a good thing. I also noticed that the GPS module was included in the box and I would not need to order it from Hasselblad. Are they just going to include these with the camera in the future or was this just something with the 4116 edition. Oh well, can't wait till Christmas...! FlashGordonPhotography Posted December 20, 2017 Share #155 Posted December 20, 2017 A correction.... You can zoom and pan images replayed in the EVF. I just hadn't figured out how. haha. (use the AF-D and AE-L buttons) Well that's about it for me. AF on the rest of my V2 HC lenses (24 and 150mm) and I'm done. And they released an adaptor for the original XPan lenses today, if you have any of those little gems lying around. Gordon

I'm probably more sensitive than most to shutter action/sound. The SL is really nice in this regard. I guess the leaf shutters present another challenge. The heat sink should be marketed as a cold weather shooting feature. I appreciate your follow-up. Jeff
faranstudio Posted December 21, 2017 Share #157 Posted December 21, 2017 I recall well your beautiful Iceland photographs, and review of the Leica S system in more challenging conditions. Can you comment on what you see as the pros and cons of each system? Thanks Mark Thanks Mark! I mainly use X1D kit and (A7RIII as a backup) for my landscape and architecture work since they are much lighter than P1 or S platforms. I really enjoyed shooting with my Leica S007 but the weight, lens AF issue, and US customer service was the main concern for me but I'm still interested to see what the next S (S008) will bring to the field in the near future (if there will be one and can compete closely with the latest technology). I didn't go with Fuji GFX since I didn't like the ergonomics, weight, design and also flash sync speed (but it is a great system). I would say Hassy's lenses are nice and 30mm is super sharp (it reminds me of S 45mm) My Phase One IQ3100 stays in the studio these days and mainly is getting used for my fashion portraiture work which is right for that job but X1D will be a good candidate for studio work as well. When it comes to color profile, both Hasselblad and Leica know the space well. After all these are just tools and it is all about the story and how photographer captures, processes and represents that. I would be able to shoot with any of these systems and with some post process get a very similar result at the end so it all comes down to what user prefers for that specific use case. Hope this helps. Happy Holidays!
faranstudio Posted December 21, 2017 Share #158 Posted December 21, 2017 I'd love hear and see more about/from the X1D from people who have done great work with the S. I've been curious about the X1D since its release and have tried it several times in stores. But I still genuinely find images from the S system more refined and pleasing, the aggregate of a lot of subtle qualities. In spite of the awkward styling of the Fuji GFX, its lenses actually strike me as better optics--and certainly better value. At their current prices the XCD lenses often cost more than used copies of the Summarits-S, which are very depreciated. S sensor and lenses are solid. Some of my best shots were captured with S007! As I mentioned on the post above, it all depends to what user prefers and none of these systems can make one a better photographer. For sure technology can help photographers to improve and enhance their craft but to some extend. For landscape, travel and architecture work I prefer lighter platform which at the moment X1D offers that nicely (solid balance of resolution + lens lineup + ergonomics). I personally prefer X1D color profile over GFX but since I shoot RAW, I can tweak the colors in post and get similar result. Hope this helps. Happy Holidays!

Because why would the forum tolerate Hasselblads, Rolleiflexes, Chamonix’s, yes even Canon AE in threads like ‘I like film’ and ‘the 4x5 thread’ and not temporary wanderings to an X1D of fervent Leica users But no one will keep you from opening a thread “I like my X1D” I bet Edited December 21, 2017 by otto.f
otto.f Posted December 21, 2017 Share #160 Posted December 21, 2017 ...none of these systems can make one a better photographer... This may be slightly off topic but this mantra is often repeated in the forum and is so untrue! I suspect this mantra is created by half cynical, petty jealous photographers who long for something they are not willing to afford to ease their minds (but to no avail I’m afraid). 1. There is not one camera that is completely fit and apt for every possible kind of photography. So for certain purposes yes one camera can make you better than another camera. A good photographer is a photographer who chooses the right tool for a certain job. 2. If a camera doesn’t feel right for you and you’re not happy with it, this forms a barrier to produce the good results. 3. I have experienced it too many times that people are very enthousiastic about images made with certain Leica lenses, which I’m certain they would have found just nice when it had been made with other lenses.
