surfmanjoe Posted October 19, 2017 Share #1 Posted October 19, 2017 Advertisement (gone after registration) I just bought ZM Planar 50mm f2 with zeiss hood. Nice lens. But an annoying thing is the original snap in lens cap. With hood on, it is hard to have the cap on/off. Does anybody have alternative solution? Thanks. matlep Posted October 19, 2017 Share #2 Posted October 19, 2017 Dont use the cap? If you need protection maybe a filter is better? You wont risk shooting with the cap on if you don´t use it
RonM Posted October 19, 2017 Share #3 Posted October 19, 2017 How about a cap that fits the inner diameter of the hood ? (if it is not a petal type.)

surfmanjoe Posted October 20, 2017 Author Share #5 Posted October 20, 2017 (edited) Thanks to all responses. Appreciated. Attached was my lens hood and lens cap. the top of cap (where to pinch using finger) is very thin, I have to carefully put it on/off with the hood on. I have thought of a protection filter or similar stuff, heard it always brings down picture quality somehow. maybe keep hood off in most time is a good idea. I can put it one when I have to use it. lct Posted October 20, 2017 Share #6 Posted October 20, 2017 I don't like much filters either but i have no problem with my ZM hood caps. I have not large fingers though and i use caps only for transportation. Best way to lose them is to use them out of the bag. Now the only alternative i know of is indeed a protective filter. Good filters won't cause significant flare or ghost image issues if you don't forget to remove them for strong backlight or night photography.
Echo63 Posted October 20, 2017 Share #7 Posted October 20, 2017 Advertisement (gone after registration) You could try and find a lens cap that fits the end of the hood. It might take a trip to your local camera store to find one that fits perfectly. I have a canon 58mm cap on the cheap eBay hood for my Voigtlander 35 Nokton, and a 52mm Canon hood on a similar hood for my 50 Summarit. Welcome, dear visitor! Daniel C.1975 Posted October 28, 2017 Share #8 Posted October 28, 2017 Hi, I also have the planar with the Zeiss hood. Since day one the lens cap sits in the drawer. If I have a hood I never use caps and in 25 years never had a problem or a damaged lens. I you feel better with a cap, the shown canon solution might be a convinent soloution.
