Last one, end on a good note.  Thanks for letting me monopolize a couple of pages of this thread.

Tim, this series worries me deeply. Not because you have posted them, but because of the prevalence of guns being openly carried in the hands of ordinary people on the streets. Also because there is a total lack of respect for Social Distancing. Both of these factors lead too easily to death. I know that sounds extreme, but the blunt facts are true. I worry that you are illustrating some of the facts of our society that are rampaging the world at present.

You capturing of these scenes is fine and I am not criticizing you, but rather the society at large that is portrayed.

Where I live, Social Distancing is not well practiced, but some attempts are made. I hope never to see guns carried, like in your images, on our streets.

This trend toward anarchy is indeed disturbing.  None of these people - who represent extremists on both sides - seemed exceptionally bright to me.  Other than the black gentleman talking to the two, let's say bald gentlemen.  He had it together and we've been in touch since then.  The newspaper articles the following day were pathetic.  The mayor pandered.  The police were great - cool and calm.

The protesters chanted, "Fuck the police, drag 'em through the streets," and "Defund the police," but when skirmishes broke out they ran to them for help.  They didn't see the irony.

But "it is what it is."  We can be lemmings and let the politicians and the media lead us around by the nose, or we can think for ourselves and not be swept up in hateful rhetoric.

That's "what we photograph on the streets" in Idaho in these times.

Really great pictures and thank you for sharing them. But, like others, I find this so shocking. What possible justification can there ever be for automatic weapons and grenade launchers on peacetime streets? It is utter lunacy. WTF is this world coming to.....

That's just the Wild West, Idaho style.  I can see where it would be shocking in other cultures where gun ownership is not permitted, or permitted in a very limited way.  Here it can be a form of personal expression.  Not kidding.  There was a large police presence and they were not bothered by it at all.  In fact, the newspaper wrote two very biased articles about the protest, siding with the protesters, and the police union wrote a counter opinion that was balanced.  Of course, it didn't help that the protesters were yelling, "Fuck the police, drag 'em through the streets!"  Idaho has absolutely zero police brutality; cops are a respected and admired part of society here.  In fact, it's an incredibly tolerate and peaceful state.

It appeared to me that the weapons were a preemptive show of force against the out-of-town agitators who have been going to BLM rallies around the country bent on destruction and civil unrest.  It was not against the local protesters - I have plenty of pictures of the two sides talking, laughing and shaking hands.  The weapons were their way of telling the agitators to behave.  Around the country the cops have been standing down and letting crowds destroy property and even kill each other.  I think they were sending a message that that's not going to happen here.  Go find another city to terrorize.

I personally did not feel unsafe at all, but I've been around a lot of weapons in military settings.  By saying all this I am not defending or rationalizing anybody's behavior, but the most vile behavior I observed, including language and personal assault on me as a neutral journalist, was from the protesters (BLM and Defund the Police crowd).  One woman slung the water from her water bottle on some counter-protesters.  Being in the middle, I was drenched with saliva, which just seems rude in this current pandemic of an upper respiratory illness.  But I'm a retired physician and I've showered many times in worse things than that!

Anyway, thanks for your comments.
