Hello all, long time lurker first time poster. I recently purchased a second hand M-E with serial number 4425XXX and test certificate dated 2014/03/13. The camera has never been sent to Leica for servicing.

Upon receiving the camera I was surprised to see the LCD display screen is sapphire glass i.e. with the small etched diamond icon.

Did Leica cut over to sapphire glass for the M-E at some point in the production run, or did I just get a lucky pull from the parts bin?

Haha, yes perhaps it has been hacked  Fortunately the difference is quite apparent compared to my M8. I've just sent the M-E to Leica for sensor replacement and will be curious to see if they comment on their 'mistake'.

My impression seems to be that Leica used to offer upgrades from M9 series to M9-P, which include either upgrading to sapphire glass alone or upgrade to sapphire glass plus top/bottom plates?

Perhaps this M-E was upgraded with the sapphire glass alone package?

I may be mistaken.

The Leica M-E comes originally with Gorilla glass. The camera was most likely sent to Leica by the prior owner for the upgrade to Sapphire glass, confirmed by the small etched diamond noted. The upgrade is approximately 800 euros.

The ME is just a budget M9 so it shares the same screen as the M9, which is plastic.
