reddot925 Posted May 31, 2017 Share #1  Posted May 31, 2017 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi, before my forum critique yell 'again with new lens?', please hold your breath!  I was just back from HK and all major Leica shops and dealers there say the new Summaron are out of stock and have been selling like hot cakes so it just got my curiosity side thinking, just thinking only no buying!  I personally have no need for another 28mm since I have the beautiful Summicron which I already hardly use since I mostly use 35mm and 50mm.  Just wondering how does the new 28mm fit it, is it for occasional landscape where you don't bigger F stop, is it for 'semi automatic' mode where you just set to hyper focal and fire away?   Do people who shoot other focal length or has bigger 28mm like the fantastic but heavy Summilux 28mm has benefit from this lens? I stroke my face with it, pass it through my hair, when on a terrace while drinking coffee and relaxing. It's such a sexy little toy. Â For shooting, I use it sometimes. I like a 28mm when meeting up with close friends and taking pictures at a table, without the need to get up. I only need one 28 (if I really need one tbh), but if I didnt have a 28 already and shot mostly in bright sunshine then it's a lovely thing, fondled by many it would seem Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

It is very convenient to stick in a shirt pocket which I would not do with a larger and heavier lens. Yes, it is surprisingly sharp for a 28mm of that era. However, it is demonstratively less sharp than the Elmarit 28mm in corners and edges (see my stone wall test post on the longer Summaron thread (post #3174618)). Serious corner to corner photos will be lacking sharpness in landscape photography without mentioning the vignetting disadvantage. Â With the advent of the M9 and later full frame Leica cameras, the 28 Cron mostly sits in the cabinet. Â Again like you, I shoot mostly 35 and 50. Ronazle Posted June 2, 2017 Share #8  Posted June 2, 2017 Stating the obvious the diminutive size is a function of the 28 Summaron being a true wide angle (not retrofocus) and small aperture. It would be interesting if the market would accept a similar lens (especially size) in other wide angle focal lengths. I for one would probably not be willing to accept the reduced aperture; however, my disagreement seems to often reflect a minority viewpoint - it (they) might well be marketable. Regards, ron Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...
