enboe Posted May 23, 2017 Share #1 Posted May 23, 2017 Advertisement (gone after registration) I really need to thin the herd someday. This Sunday, I dropped of an M-9P(u), 2 Monochroms, and an M-E with a shutter count of one off at the local Leica store. I have asked for the sensor check and replace as needed on all. All were purchased new by myself, so there should be no cost. Two questions: 1) How many other people are sending back their M9/M-E/Monochrom bodies in a preemptive fashion in hopes of avoiding a $1000 repair after 8/16? I have visions of Leica receiving back tens or even hundreds of thousands of bodies for sensor inspection and replacement over the next 4 months. 2) Related to 1), what has your turn-around time been and when did you have the service performed? Here's hoping to having my four bodies return in time for Christmas. Eric

jaapv Posted May 23, 2017 Share #2 Posted May 23, 2017 Bought new or used does not make a difference, fortunately, and I don't think that there were hundreds of thousands of these cameras built . Anyway, CS Wetzlar sounded confident that they could handle it. Overly optimistic? Time will tell.
pedaes Posted May 23, 2017 Share #3 Posted May 23, 2017 I think you will only get sensor replaced if there are signs of problems now, not preventively.
jaapv Posted May 23, 2017 Share #4 Posted May 23, 2017 That is correct. OTOH, if the M9 is fine now after eight years, I won't be worried for the rest of its life span. The MM1, it had the sensor replaced a couple of years ago - still the old type. Leica has not made a clear pronouncement yet for those cameras. Will the 5 year period start with the sensor replacement? That would be reasonable, IMO.
johnwolf Posted May 23, 2017 Share #5 Posted May 23, 2017 Wow, four cameras! Presumably they are being sent NJ. My experience, and that of most reports I've heard, suggests twelve weeks. But they must be flooded with cameras now, so who knows? I know they have also had times where sensors have been backordered. Let's hope they have a big supply now. AceVentura1986 Posted May 29, 2017 Share #6 Posted May 29, 2017 Sent my ME in with significant corrosion before the new policy was announced. My MM has one spot that may be corrosion but I'll wait to nearer the deadline in hopes of receiving my ME first.

I asked Leica regarding this, as my M9 got a new sensor before the official replacement program and before the second gen sensor. Weirdly enough, Leica told me that my M9 had already received a second gen sensor last year when the camera was in for repairs after an accident. At the time I wasn't told, nor did my service record or bills reflect that change. Since I did have banding issues beforehand - and not after, it seems like this was indeed the case. - maybe it was already showing signs of corrosion, maybe it was preemptive - I really don't know. As for the question of the 5 year period for first gen replacement sensors, that sadly wasn't answered.
