Revisiting MF systems

If Neil's contact is right about an 80MP S, and my guess is this is right, based on everything that Leica have ever said about staying at 37MP and there needing to be double the resolution to make a difference for an upgrade, then I will jump into the S System. That is what I've been waiting for.

Let's hope it's true. But like I said. This high resolution will really be taxing on the focusing system and the shortcoming of the SLR design will really handicap Leica S as a whole. Phase detection focusing is not going to cut it.

I don't have a problem focussing high resolution with an SLR. Even manual focussing a Hasselblad V, which is a lot more involved and relatively difficult, is OK.

I just tried the Fuji GFX with the 63mm lens for a few days. In spite of the bulk and weight, I still find the S system's overall experience and default output much more pleasing. Going back to the dinosaur that's the S2 from the GFX reminds me of going back to the M9 from the Sony A7's. The tech specs are diametrically opposed to the results, aesthetically speaking.

How's the 63mm lens? I haven't tried that yet.

It's light, unflappable, and very competent. It out-resolves the sensor at f/2.8, has no geometric distortion, and has a flatter field than the Leica S 70 at infinity. Autofocus speed is adequate, probably just a tad slower than the 70 on the S 007, but probably more reliable in lowlight. I like that you can choose between controlling the aperture on the lens and on the camera body.

Most of the S lenses have this beautiful painterly OOF transition that I find very pleasing when I pay attention to it. I want to say the Fuji 63mm is missing some of that refinement. But again my experience was very brief, and I'm no bokeh connoisseur.

I am no bokeh guy as well. But would like to have a small easy to use semi portrait lens.

They didn't use the linear motor drive for the 63. It is not going to be as fast as their zoom and 120

As much as I criticize Leica S, there is zero complain about its IQ once you get everything right.

It's really depend on what you do, if you shoot landscape mainly, I don't see a good reason to shoot S (anymore) but for fashion(main market for S?) or portrait, there is not a system better than it, it is all about lens rendering, ergonomic and sensor reproduce skin tone.

I have resisted adapting old lens to the GFX, but over the weekend, I felt like I want to test out f1.4 on a 44x33 sensor. So I jump the gun a set of 1.4 or 2 lens (35mm 50mm, 100mm f/2) from Contax YC lens from the 80s....

These 30 years old lens gave me some pretty interesting result, some vignette from a 135 lens but no cut off.Not even Leica R lens is able to do this (they cut off at about 50mm LUX)  and the OOC Jpeg is just amazing, not something I can say I can get easily out of Leica S, certainly not at this aperture...

Planar 50mm f/1.4, OOC

Wow! If you don't mind me asking, how did you carry all that equipment?

In a backpack... Cambo Actus is extremely small, when detached of its standards, it's same size as a lens... Weight wise, I took with me 1 zoom lens, 3 enlarging lens and a Shift lens. and it weight ok for a 3~4 hour hike... The really heavy thing is tripod...

.

I'm sure the S007 would provide an improvement over my S006 experience, but that too would come at cost.... literally.

Jeff

It does. Especially the functions you have with live view, where you can focus anywhere on the screen........The S007 is an amazing tool, the SL is also an amazing tool but nowhere near as good as the S007

You missed the context of my quote... it referred solely to my handholding experience with the S006, and potentially the SL (including faster lenses with OIS), compared to the S007.

I'm well aware of the feature differences.... long before you bought into the system.

I hope you did not take my comment to mean you were an ignoramus. I meant that knowing the individual does not make one a better photographer. You have demonstrated that you are a capable photographer.

Jesse

No worries, I really didn't know much about Leica's history and also its designers...
