Putting some meat on that:

Turnover to 31 March 2007: €145m (+36.5%)

System Cameras: €53.5m (37%) (+55.5%)

Compact Cameras: €39.3m (27%) (+132.4%)

Sport Optics: €30,7m (21%) (-15.7%) - some products at end of life with new introductions planned.

Profit €0.5m, compared to a loss of €9.2m last year

US: Sales +44.2%, €37.8m, 26% of total, biggest single market

Germany: +19%, €24.2m

A welcome set of results, I would say.

In the days when they were producing the M6 as the principal camera, I seem to remember that they made 2-3 dozen cameras a week.

It is amazing that these guys exist at all. Most products in the so-called luxury category don't last like this.

And this particular product(s), tho expensive, are actually not luxury items by many definitions: they last forever, get serviced forever, and don't depreciate much.

Is the Panasonic relationship reflected in "compact cameras"? Dojn't forget that Leica is more than just cameras, FYI.

Err, it's cameras and binoculars/spotting scopes and IP licencing. That's it. It is NOT microscopes, lab instruments and surveying instruments.

I too would be curious to examinate some in-depth detailed financials... for US companies one can find the superanalytical "SEC filings"... don't know if the German market in which Leica stock is traded requires this level of detail... does someone knows something about ?

I believe the FY 2006 Annual Report will be posted soon, timed to coincide with the annual shareholders' meeting.

"Most products in the so-called luxury category don't last like this."

Not so, there are dozens of very small but very successful European watch companies still producing exclusive and expensive products despite the dominance of cheap and accurate watches.

Not saying this is how Leica should go, but biggest is not always best. Having a niche market is a good way for many businesses to secure their longterm future.

I think, though, there are still more products Leica could develop with greater mass-market and professional appeal.

Develop - yes. Produce for the mass-market -no. The workforce is too small and additional craftsmen/women not so easily trained.

I wonder to what extent the M8 upgrade and various extra costs for other start-up troubles have influenced the result.

It is costumarily the OEM company who is responsible for that. There is also "Risk Management Insurance".
