St Michael & All Angels Church, Linton, West Yorkshire, UK.

This image is so sharp that I had a 24x36inch, 61x91.5cm print produced. Such detail, What a lens!

Vi injecting her friend with heroin. They'll head down to nearby Street 51 at night to hustle Barang for their daily heroin habit. "suck, suck for money" Vi said.

AK snorting ice, Phnom Penh

He used to be a child soldier in the Khmer Rouge near Battambang in the mid 1990s, and always hugged the most precious thing he had while sleeping...his AK47....hence the nickname. No education so now he's a drug dealer and pimp.

Fantastic images and portfolio Jonathan!

Isn't carrying a Leica Q into these places a bit risky?

Perhaps.  I'm quite timid really, and even after 3+ years on this project in Cambodia, i still get the shakes from stress after a couple of days shooting pictures like this but that's also a combination of fast bike rides at night along unlit streets, breathing second-hand ice in tiny slum buildings, and witnessing human hopelessness. I'm not sure I can go on for much longer (but I've said that before!).

Amazing work and awfully sad lives...

I'm not going to tell you to quit, and I'm not pushing you to continue... the rule I learned - and although it's never quite in context, it translates pretty directly - is: 'Rescuer First'. Which is to say, this is beautiful and important work, but it is not the only story needing to be told, and, based on the quality of your work, certainly not the only story you should tell in your lifetime.

So. Please, tell this story... but....

If it is a story so important that you must sacrifice all of your potential, current and future, to it, then do. But, truthfully, I can not see that this story is worth all of the future stories you will sacrifice if you push on too far.

(Annie Dillard quotes Goethe: "Do not hurry. Do not rest.")

This story is worth telling. As are all stories.

Keep your self intact. Without that, you have nothing. The inverted lesson I learned from my mother is that love isn't about self-sacrifice, it's about generosity. One whittles away at your core. The other is sourced from strength. Don't mistake one for the other.

Like sourdough, save some of your energy, your enthusiasm, to cultivate for the next project.

Péturskirkja or "Church of Peter" in North Iceland.

Lovely picture!

Incidentally, am I right to assume that the word for 'Church' is 'Irkja'?  It seems closely related to 'Igreja' which in turn is probably the root of the Hindustani word 'Girja'.

That might be right vikasmg. Found this regarding the word: Middle English chir (iche, Old English cir (ice ≪ Greek kȳri(akón (dômathe Lord's (house), neuter of kȳriakós of the master,equivalent to kȳ́ri (osmaster ( kŷr (ospower + -ios noun suffix) + -akos,variant of -ikos -icakin to Dutch kerk, German Kirche, Old Norse kirkja.
