Advertisement Posted February 1, 2017 Posted February 1, 2017 Hi mehtasunil, Take a look here MATE on M10. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
a.noctilux Posted February 1, 2017 Share #2 Posted February 1, 2017 Funny that this morning, I almost wanted to trade-in my MATE v1 for M10. But my wife, after trying this MATE, said wisely "you will regret it, I do love it, keep it for me ". When I asked her if there was some finder intrusion at 28mm, she answered "which intrusion ? just move a bit right and down to see hiden part ! ". Wisdom wife . Then I think she was right and keep the MATE to use with my futur M10 . I love her and this lens has given me nice photos with my other Ms till now, for years. Where I had my head when wanting to part with this one ? I will report back when I'll have use this MATE with M10. Maybe nothing to say more, untill now it took pleasing photos, so why not with M10 . duckrider Posted February 1, 2017 Share #3 Posted February 1, 2017 gave a like- not for Your MATE or M10, but for Your wife My best wishes to her and she'll go on with her behave! Thomas p.s.: @mehtasunil: MATE will do great, there should be no difference on M10 than on M9 & M...
a.noctilux Posted February 1, 2017 Share #4 Posted February 1, 2017 Thanks Thomas. In past time I do pass her the MATE (and other lenses too) from time to time. She wants just one lens on her M but sometime she needs one (or two more) . Now, she could use TRI in ONE and would'nt even notice those flaws... FlashGordonPhotography Posted February 1, 2017 Share #6 Posted February 1, 2017 I use a last version MATE with my M240. Longer is better on the digital M's so 50 is better than 35 etc.... The difference is mostly toward the edges and this does improve stopped down. It's definitely a Mandler lens and looks nothing like the modern glass but is still a nice lens that makes nice images. Keep your lens..... You can always sell it if you decide the images aren't what you want. In addition, there are some wonderful CV lenses, especially the new 35mm and 50, available that are relative bargains and fantastic in their own right, if you crave a faster prime. chmilar Posted February 1, 2017 Share #7 Posted February 1, 2017 Advertisement (gone after registration) I bought a MATE back in 1998 when I also bought an M6 TTL. I have been using it on the M typ240, and it should be much the same on the M10. This lens has a tendency to flare at 50mm. One nice thing to having live view on an M camera is that you can check if the lens is flaring, and then do something to shade it. This was not possible on a film M - you just had to wait until the film was processed to see if you lost the shot to flare. I got my MATE 6-bit coded, because I like to have the focal length saved in the EXIF data. The camera is able to use the 6-bit code plus the frameline selection to know if the lens is at 28, 35, or 50. It is a very nice "walking around outdoors" lens, since you can take just one lens to cover many situations, and f4 is fine during daylight.
Mark Pope Posted February 2, 2017 Share #8 Posted February 2, 2017 I also use a MATE on the M240. I really do like this lens. My only regret is not buying one new when I had the opportunity! If you do get the M10, then I'm sure you will be delighted with the images you get with this lens. The flare at 50mm is a bit of a nuisance from time to time. I would definitely recommend getting the MATE 6-bit coded.
steppenw0lf Posted February 3, 2017 Share #9 Posted February 3, 2017 If the MATE is coded, what will be the focal length recorded in the camera ? Will it be only one length for all three, or will the correct number (28 35 50) be recognized and put into the EXIF ?
jdlaing Posted February 3, 2017 Share #10 Posted February 3, 2017 If the MATE is coded, what will be the focal length recorded in the camera ? Will it be only one length for all three, or will the correct number (28 35 50) be recognized and put into the EXIF ? It records whichever of the three focal lengths the lens is set. There is a little different configuration on the mount that has a little spring loaded lever to identify the focal length to the camera.
Mark Pope Posted February 3, 2017 Share #11 Posted February 3, 2017 Each focal length will be recorded. The lens code works in conjunction with the frame that's selected to work out the selected focal length.
steppenw0lf Posted February 3, 2017 Share #12 Posted February 3, 2017 I wonder if the M to L adapter (for the SL) can also recognize this. (I know this is not the place, but maybe somebody knows).
chmilar Posted February 3, 2017 Share #13 Posted February 3, 2017 M to L adapter will not recognize which focal length is selected. This information is determined from the mechanical linkage between the lens and M camera, used to set the frame lines in the M's OVF. The adapter does not connect to the mechanical linkage. Lord Lucan Posted February 4, 2017 Share #14 Posted February 4, 2017 Each focal length will be recorded. The lens code works in conjunction with the frame that's selected to work out the selected focal length. Is that called magic? I like my MATE and WATE mounted on Leicas and Sonys. @MehtaSunil I may be making a journey your way in next few weeks.
MarkP Posted February 4, 2017 Share #15 Posted February 4, 2017 The rendering of the MATE (I have a coded v2) is indeed lovely on my M240 and Monochrome v1, and I agree that it renders more like the last generation of lenses. I don't use it for critical work where I need less distortion and more resolution, and the barrel distortion at 28mm and flare at 50mm is frustrating. In most daytime situations f4.0 is fast enough. However the convenience of such a high quality 3-in-1-lens of only 330gm lens is fantastic. If yours is used and is a good mechanically reliable unit then don't sell it. This is not a lens that is easily replaced. There will always be 'new and better' digital Leica M cameras coming along. I'm off to look at the M10 this afternoon so will also take the MATE along.
