digitalfx Posted January 27, 2017 Share #1 Posted January 27, 2017 Advertisement (gone after registration) Looks like Leica is now shipping cameras with a newer version of FW. Is there a reason this isn't available to all of us?
Advertisement Posted January 27, 2017 Posted January 27, 2017 Hi digitalfx, Take a look here FW 1.0.2.0. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!

scott kirkpatrick Posted January 29, 2017 Share #4 Posted January 29, 2017 Four different numbers for a firmware release sounds awfully complicated. Usually they have labels like 1.0, 1.1, 2.0, etc... Maybe this isn't the final numbering. scott
sandymc Posted January 29, 2017 Share #5 Posted January 29, 2017 For what it's worth, commercial practice is that - The lowest digit (1.0.2.X) is an internal version number, so for internal testing - The second lowest (1.0.X.0) is for bug fixes - The third lowest (1.X.2.0) is for minor feature upgrades - The highest number is for major changes in functionality. But Leica play by their own rules. Sandy

scott kirkpatrick Posted February 3, 2017 Share #7 Posted February 3, 2017 Advertisement (gone after registration) I don't expect to see firmware for downloading on the Leica website until there is a release that (by Sandy MC's guidelines above) constitutes an upgrade that users will install themselves. So until 1.1.x.y comes along, we use what comes inside the camera. scott
Ario Arioldi Posted February 3, 2017 Share #8 Posted February 3, 2017 got mine a couple weeks ago. 1.0.2.0 was installed. It is a matter of when the camera was completed and packaged. My first sample was dated January 17, 2017 and had FW 1.0.2.0 installed, the second sample I got is dated December 21, 2016 and has FW 1.0.1.0 installed. But I would expect either 1.0.2.0 or perhaps 1.0.3.0 to be on the site within a few weeks. Depending on whether they find any bugs they want to fix. Sad reality of software development is that no matter how much beta testing you do, a paying customer will always find another bug Sandy
digitalfx Posted February 3, 2017 Author Share #10 Posted February 3, 2017 I have never seen a manufacture ship cameras with new FW that isn't available for everyone to download. Its very odd to ship cameras with two different versions.

The only cameras with 1.0.1.0 were loaners given out before the announcement. scott

edw Posted February 3, 2017 Share #14 Posted February 3, 2017 I have never seen a manufacture ship cameras with new FW that isn't available for everyone to download. Its very odd to ship cameras with two different versions. If you consider than cameras today, even Leicas, are computers, this doesn't necessarily surprise me. Perhaps there are two variants of the camera. For example, Apple has multiple manufacturers of radios—Qualcomm and Intel? I can't recall exactly—for the same model, even the same SKU, of iPhone. Similarly, taking Apple as an example again, they would often issue dot releases of the OS for new hardware, which would put the OS version for a new model ahead of the existing most-current version of the OS for everyone else. The next major point release would consolidate all the changes and then all the machines could then be on the same version. Perhaps it's the same with the M10. Perhaps there are two wifi chip vendors, or something similar. (I'm not saying "hey, maybe there are two sensor vendors" specifically to not freak anyone out.) And they require slightly different firmware, but version 1.0.3 or 1.1 or whatever will roll up the variants so the right thing is done regardless of hardware variation. I'm not saying this is the case, I'm just saying it's quite possible—and no reason for concern—that there won't be an update from 1.0.1.0 to 1.0.2.0. Version numbers tend to get interpreted linearly, but often times version reflect a branching tree structure where sibling versions are simply different, peer-level, versions, but need to be given ordinal numbers because version numbers are, well, numbers. My advice would be to chill. Not that anyone isn't chill.
scott kirkpatrick Posted February 3, 2017 Share #15 Posted February 3, 2017 My advice would be to chill. Not that anyone isn't chill. I think that is good advice. I haven't heard complaints of any problems tied to specific firmwares.

The only cameras with 1.0.1.0 were loaners given out before the announcement. scott Mine is a new camera, purchased from leica dealer. Shipped with 1.0.1.0 It seems all the December cameras came with 1.0.1.0 and all the January cameras came with 1.0.2.
digitalfx Posted February 3, 2017 Author Share #17 Posted February 3, 2017 I think that is good advice. I haven't heard complaints of any problems tied to specific firmwares. you should read the FW thread I started...there are plenty of small bugs. Nothing thats a big issue...but my point is, when a manufacture starts shipping cameras with new FW...its SOP to release that to everyone. Its odd that two versions are in the wild and neither version is available for download...thats all I'm saying. I could care less that I cant download 1.0.2.0...just simply stated that its an odd behavior.

scott kirkpatrick Posted February 4, 2017 Share #20 Posted February 4, 2017 you should read the FW thread I started...there are plenty of small bugs. Its odd that two versions are in the wild and neither version is available for download...thats all I'm saying. I could care less that I cant download 1.0.2.0...just simply stated that its an odd behavior. So far, I haven't seen reports of a bug that is present in 1.0.1.0 and absent in 1.0.2.0 or an unusual behavior that occurs in one firmware and not in the other. That's probably because with 1.0.2.0 now shipping there are not likely to be many copies of 1.0.1.0 out in the hands of the innocent. So I would guess when there is an accumulation of fine tuning corrections ready to go, we will see a firmware for download.
